Position Summary

The Center on Global Energy Policy seeks an Associate Director of the Carbontech Development Initiative (CDI), a grantmaking program to research, commercialize, and scale technologies for lowering emissions by turning carbon into useful products. The Associate Director reports to the CDI Managing Director and collaborates with the leadership team, program staff, and subcontractors. This position is the key party responsible for external-facing science communication (including marketing and branding), stakeholder engagement, and event coordination. They also support internal-facing program facilitation and fundraising for program longevity. Some of these responsibilities (e.g. branding) may be outsourced to sub-contractors.

The incumbent will communicate the value of carbontech research and commercialization to stakeholders and investors, engaging with industrial consortia, raising support for new tech research and commercialization. To do this effectively, they must stay apprised of relevant carbontech solutions: research ideation, initial funding to market viability, technology readiness levels (TRLs), commercialization pipelines, policy landscapes, environmental justice concerns, and possible barriers to implementation.

The Associate Director will contribute to culturally diverse and inclusive communications, and deepening our understanding of the impacts of racism, environmental justice, gender equality, and inclusion on the carbontech ecosystem.

Responsibilities

As the leading science communicator for the program, the Associate Director will lead public affairs, industrial relations, and communications for the CDI, working with the leadership team (Founding Director, Managing Director, Research Director, and Tech-to-Market Director). This would include:

  • Developing clear, consistent messaging about the program goals and objectives
  • Collaborating with the leadership team to achieve maximum carbontech impact in New York State, facilitated through events and outreach
  • Supporting daily operations and administration of the Initiative (e.g. reporting, metrics collection)
  • Specific responsibility for operations and administration that pertain to communication, events, and outreach. Including but not limited to:
  • Coordinating the activities of the Initiative’s Advisory Board and Steering Committee and managing relationships with the members of these bodies.
  • Coordinating with Columbia Technology Ventures’ Lab-to-Market team to organize and run workshops, information sessions, skills labs, and other events
  • Attending conferences and other events as a representative of the program and Columbia University
  • Developing and maintaining website and social media; or managing sub-contractors with this expertise
  • Developing and maintaining branding; or managing sub-contractors with this expertise
  • Writing content about projects and teams accepted into the incubator and accelerator
  • Assisting Research Director and Tech to Market Director in drafting announcements about upcoming events and solicitations
  • In partnership with the leadership team, co-leading the industrial consortium program, including:
  • Planning and executing industrial consortium events
  • Engaging with development partners within Columbia University for maintaining a cohesive fundraising strategy involving industry partners
  • Assisting leadership team to identify and cultivate industrial funder relationships
  • Developing and maintaining a fundraising strategy and pipeline
  • Serving as point of contact for media, policy, and corporate inquiries
  • Supporting the Managing Director in responsibility for budget and project outcomes
  • Collaborating with the CDI leadership to identify, create and implement strategic plans to support execution of the program
  • Identifying and managing subcontractors to support work where appropriate.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of directly related experience in cleantech, carbontech or other related fields.
    • Ability to write, present, and communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse stakeholders in public and private sectors.
    • Demonstrated experience translating information to general terms and helping others understand impact, including influencing and communicating effectively at a high level.
    • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrated success linking scientific objectives to broader societal and economic impacts, particularly for New York State.
    • Demonstrated success leading event planning, outreach, engagement, and leveraging online presence for maximum visibility.
    • Strong analytical skills to solve complex problems with excellent judgment based on analysis of multiple sources of information.
    • Ability to work under minimal supervision on complex assignments, with a high degree of initiative and independent judgment.
    • Strong project management skills and attention to detail.
    • Knowledge of fundraising strategy and practices as related to research, and/or non-profit management, and/or startups.
    • Ability to foster an inclusive workplace where diversity and individual differences are valued and leveraged to achieve the vision and mission of the organization.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s or PhD in relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
    • Additional years of experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate the value of carbontech research and commercialization to a variety of public and private stakeholders and investors, and engage meaningfully with industrial consortium members, eliciting support for new tech research and commercialization.
    • Demonstrated success in fundraising strategy and practices as related to research, and/or non-profit management, and/or startups.
    • An understanding of tech readiness levels (TRLs), carbontech policy landscapes, environmental justice issues, and similar barriers to implementation.
    • Demonstrated expertise and leadership experience in carbontech.
    • Experience collaborating with New York State stakeholders.
    • Experience in innovative tech-to-market programs.
    • Leadership in carbontech deployment policy and analysis.
