Department Summary
The University of Oregon's Museum of Natural and Cultural History protects significant collections, enhances knowledge, and encourages stewardship of human and natural history through research, preservation, and education.

Position Summary
This position is part of the Archaeological Research Division (a.k.a the Oregon State Museum of Anthropology/OSMA) at MNCH. OSMA was created in 1935 by the State Legislature and has been at the forefront of innovative archaeological research in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest ever since. The position's primary task is to conduct Cultural Resource Management (CRM) investigations, collect field data, contribute to sponsor deliverables including technical reports, and document cultural resources with appropriate Oregon State Historic Preservation Office forms. The Research Assistant/Associate may supervise archaeological field technicians and manage portions of larger projects under the supervision of a project manager.

Minimum Requirements
Research Assistant Rank:
  • Master's degree in archaeology, anthropology, history, historic preservation, or a closely related field
  • Minimum 3 years experience in CRM work
  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior's professional qualifications standards in archaeology or historic preservation and any applicable state qualifications

    Research Associate Rank:
  • All of the above AND
  • Ph.D in related field

    Professional Competencies
  • Proficient writing skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act,

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with CRM policies in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest
  • Familiarity with criterion considerations of National Register eligibility
  • Fieldwork travel (up to 50%)
