General Statement of Job

The Head Athletic Trainer evaluates the physical condition of athletes and advises and treats amateur athletes in order to maintain maximum physical fitness.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

Develops and maintains a comprehensive medical care and injury prevention model for all intercollegiate athletics programs.

Maintains supplies and equipment to provide adequate athletic training support for MSSU student athletes.

Provides training rooms hours and supervision to allow sufficient opportunity for student-athletes to receive treatment and rehabilitation of injuries.

Schedules training coverage for all home events and practices as needed. Assigns travel with athletic teams when necessary.

Ensures that student-athletes have completed a physical and be cleared by a medical doctor before being allowed to practice.

Runs training room in accordance with all applicable NCAA, MIAA, State, National and Institutional rules and regulations while promoting a culture of compliance.

Serves as a liaison with the athletic team physicians and area medical community, and refer student athletes as necessary.

Maintains accurate injury and treatment records.

Updates coaches and athletes as to the playing status in a timely manner.

Administers all insurance activities associated with MSSU athletic injuries.

Designs and implements modality rehabilitation protocols for student-athletes.

Renders first aid to injured players.

Supervises Assistant Athletic Trainers and student interns.

Supervises all Strength and Conditioning coaches.

Administrative duties as assigned by Athletic Director including but not limited to budgeting, maintaining inventory, etc.

Performs other related duties as required.

Education, Experience, and Licenses

Master's degree from an accredited college or university required.

Minimum six months college level athletic experience required; or any combination of education and experience.

Certification by the National Athletic Trainer's Association required. Must have a current valid driver's license and ability to meet university insurance requirements for driving university vehicles.

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to use a personal computer including the use of spreadsheets.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to be flexible to work long hours with student athletes.
  • Requires strong interpersonal skills.
  • Requires the ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Requires the ability to use computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes.

Requires the ability to smell and taste.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
