Job Summary

Residence Life at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applicants for the Coordinator for Social Action & Leadership position! This role provides leadership, planning, management and administrative oversight to residence life student leadership development and social justice initiatives for an undergraduate community of over 9,000 students in the residence halls and on-campus apartments. The Coordinator for Social Action & Leadership serves as the primary advisor to the EcoReps Sustainability Leadership Program and social justice leadership opportunities and provides support for Community Councils.

This position will help create opportunities for social justice initiatives and involvement in the residence halls, in the greater university, and in the Boulder community. The Coordinator also works closely with student leaders and campus administrators to enhance the student experience within our identity based living learning communities and special interest housing areas.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Student Leadership & Social Justice
  • Coordinate, supervise, and advise the EcoRep Program with Residence Life & the Environmental Center to increase first-year student leadership opportunities for environmental justice education within the residence halls. This includes advising two EcoRep Directors as well as the oversight of student leaders in the program, and working with a staff co-facilitator who serves as a context expert in sustainability.
  • Coordinate, oversee, and advise the development of a social justice advocate program with Residence Life & the Center for Inclusion & Social Change to increase first-year student leadership opportunities for social justice education within the residence halls.
  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of all EcoRep/social justice related programs and events.
  • Attend, and provide support during, annual student retreats.
  • Serve as the primary adviser for conference delegations attending local, regional, and national conferences, including supporting conference preparations, on site advising support, operating a motor vehicle to transport students to/from conference activities, and post conference wrap up reports.
  • Hold one-to-one meetings with the executive members of EcoReps and SJA.
  • Attend all EcoRep meetings, and other student leadership meetings as needed, such as advocacy board meetings and Board of Directors meetings.
  • Oversee, help coordinate and attend EcoRep as well as social justice campus-wide events such as the Fall Welcome programming, Residence Life Student Leadership Banquet, and other related events.
  • Coordinate and oversee the EcoRep pre-arrival program, and support residence hall move-in through volunteer coordination.
  • Provide training for residence life staff related to sustainability along with social justice education.
  • Serve as an acting Community Council adviser, in the instance of a Hall Director vacancy.
  • Advocate for the needs of residence hall student leaders to departmental and campus leadership.
  • Develop and maintain connections between student retention and success programs in Student Affairs and equity initiatives/programs.
  • Support student organizations in the implementation and use of Presence and GivePulse, or other student management software.
  • Identify standard methodologies and implement strategies (based on development theories and research) to assure full student participation and engagement in residential living.
Diversity, Inclusion, & Equity Initiatives
  • Establish/maintain partnerships with other diversity, inclusion, and equity program staff across campus, including the Center for Inclusion & Social Change.
  • Oversee campaigns to connect residence hall students into existing campus initiatives, such as Peers Educating & Empowering Peers (PEEP) Program through the Center for Inclusion and Social Change, and the Cultural Events Board & Dennis Small Cultural Center through the Center for Student Involvement.
  • Cultivate partnerships between residence hall social justice programming and the Center for Inclusion & Social Change to increase the number of diversity, inclusion, and equity programs happening within the residential neighborhoods on campus.
  • Collaborate with the Residential Experience Committee to develop/implement programs to help residence hall students get involved and engaged in inclusion initiatives within their residence hall, university, and Boulder community.
  • Develop/implement with residence life staff and social justice advocates various inclusion education programs for residence hall students through our Residential Experience model.
  • Supervise identity based living learning community peer mentors (3) to ensure successful implementation of the living learning communities goals and outcomes of the Lucile B Buchanan, Spectrum, and Multicultural Perspectives Living Learning Communities located in Hallett Hall.
  • Partner with the Hallett Hall Director, Center for Inclusion & Social Change, LLC Advisors, and LLC peer mentors to coordinate the student experience for the Lucile B Buchanan, Spectrum, and Por La Cultura Living Learning Communities.
  • Oversee student/resident recruitment for Lucile B Buchanan, Spectrum, and Por La Cultura Living Learning Communities.
Sustainability Initiatives
  • Facilitate competitions with regard to Lucid energy metering system and any new sustainability initiatives launched on campus.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with other sustainability program staff across campus, including the Environmental Center.
  • Oversee campaigns to connect residence hall students into existing campus initiatives, including but not limited to Sustainable Buffs Initiative and Climate Justice Leadership Program through the Environmental Center, and CU in the Community and SkoServe through the Volunteer Resource Center
  • Develop partnerships between EcoRep programming and the Environmental Center to increase the number of sustainability programs happening within the residential neighborhoods on campus. With other residence life staff, develop and implement programs to help residence hall students get involved and engaged in sustainability practices within their residence hall, university, and Boulder community.
  • Partner with the Assistant Director for Community Center Operations, the Environmental Center, and students to coordinate donation drives that occur within residence halls and apartment communities.
  • Develop and implement with residence life staff and EcoReps various sustainability education programs for residence hall students through our Residential Experience model.
Administration & Financial Management
  • Follow all federal, state, university and departmental budget procedures
  • Ensure tracking of EcoRep equipment and tidiness of EcoRep offices and storage rooms.
  • Allocate budget dollars to support critical initiatives.
  • Oversee residence life budgets and expenditures for social justice and sustainability initiatives.
  • Serve on 1-2 residence life committee’s to assist with departmental initiatives and strategic goals.
  • Perform other functions and assume other responsibilities related to management as assigned.
Emergency Response
  • Understand and apply Residence Life emergency management protocols to ensure proper reporting and resolution of crisis situations that may arise.
  • On a case by case basis, serve in an on-call role through a rotation with hall directors. The on-call roll for after-hours emergency response may require reporting to the residence hall community to support and advise those impacted or in first line of response roles.
  • Provide crisis intervention and emergency management as needed.

  • Work Schedule: M-F 8-5pm with some night and weekend responsibilities. Flexible work schedule may be available.

  • The salary range is $50,000- $55,000 annually.

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional or graduate assistant experience advancing diversity and inclusion efforts.
  • One year program management, program development, and program implementation experience.
  • Professional leadership experience in an educational field or related field, or two years in a graduate assistantship with similar experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Master's degree in higher education administration or a related field.
  • Experience working in education, specifically higher education setting
  • Demonstrated experience in managing sustainability programs & initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability in organizing and facilitating student development programs and operational responsibilities, including large-scale events.
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills in program planning, assessment, budget and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated skills in mentoring and supervising student leaders.
