Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology

 

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Medicine, is seeking a Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology to support its mission of health care, education, and research. We seek an outstanding nationally recognized physician leader and scholar in anesthesiology, with a proven commitment to clinical care, medical education, training, and research. They will have the knowledge and ability to effectively lead physicians and other health professionals, researchers, and educators while embracing the values of quality and financial sustainability.

 

The University of Tennessee first launched its Memphis campus in 1911, dedicating it solely to health science education and research. Seed programs in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy quickly flourished, and within a few short years, new programs were initiated in health professions, graduate health sciences and nursing. Each of those programs grew to become a college in its own right. In 1963, the UT Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville, based at the UT Medical Center, became part of the UT Health Science Center. In 1974, the UT College of Medicine in Chattanooga, based at Erlanger Health System, joined the UTHSC system. In 2014, Saint Thomas health in Nashville began collaborating with UTHSC to create a Nashville campus, helping to promote statewide medical education.

 

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis has 15 faculty with 5 new faculty joining by September 2022. It has a newly established 12 slot residency program with the first graduating residents to complete the program in June 2023. The establishment of a research mission is essential to the growth of the department.

 

Anesthesia services are provided at Regional One Health, the oldest hospital in Tennessee, charted in 1829, as the only designated Level 1 Trauma Center in a 150-mile radius, the Elvis Presley Trauma Center has a multidisciplinary team of highly trained specialist to provide care of high-risk patients from Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri. It has a full-service burn center, the only center in the Mid-South verified by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons. Regional One provides services for High Risk Pregnancy and has one of the nation’s oldest and largest neonatal intensive care units at the Sheldon B. Korones Newborn Center. Our faculty anesthesiologists provide a full range of inpatient and outpatient care for patients undergoing surgery, including, Ambulatory anesthesia, Cardiovascular anesthesia, Critical Care medicine, General anesthesia, Obstetrical anesthesia (including labor epidurals), and Oncology surgery. Additionally, the Department of Anesthesia offers acute inpatient pain management services as well as chronic pain management in an outpatient clinic setting.

Reporting to the Executive Dean of the College of Medicine, the chair is responsible for the overall administrative, academic, and clinical outcomes of the department. UTHSC seeks an accomplished academician and clinician with an MD or DO from an accredited school, current board certification, with a national reputation for clinical, educational and scholarly activities appropriate for an appointment to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in either a clinical or tenure-track position. It is preferred that candidates possess significant leadership experience and demonstrated fiscal and clinical operations managerial responsibility, effective communication skills and the ability to advance the professional development of the department’s faculty. The ideal candidate will be able to grow the department’s clinical program and possess a vision to ensure that the department grows in rank, reputation and supports the University’s Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Mission in cultivating a culture of excellence and a safe environment, where all individuals, experiences and differences are valued and respected.
