Department Summary
The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health is a new Portland-based institute that will provide a bold new approach to addressing the behavioral and mental health care needs of Oregon's children. The Ballmer Institute was made possible by a lead gift of more than $425 million from Connie and Steve Ballmer, co-founders of Ballmer Group Philanthropy.

The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health at the University of Oregon will be the first of its kind, establishing a new model for behavioral and mental health care, and the most comprehensive effort undertaken by a U.S. university and its partners, creating a new model of care.

The Ballmer Institute, the UO will:
  • Develop a new level of behavioral health practitioners through new undergraduate degree and certificate programs. The new degree program is subject to state approval.
  • Deliver science-based early detection, prevention, and treatment strategies directly into the lives of children and their families.
  • Accelerate the discovery and dissemination of new technologies and research informed by clinical context.
  • Provide scholarships through a $100 million endowment to graduate a new, diverse and culturally rich workforce prepared to work directly with those in need.
    Position Summary
The Academic and Career Advisor provides academic and career advising for current and prospective students in The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health. The Academic and Career Advisor helps students develop academic plans and goals, identifies barriers to retention and degree completion, leverages available resources, and provides guidance and support as students pursue their academic goals, attain their degrees, and begin their professional journeys.

The Academic and Career Advisor must be culturally competent and able to work with all populations of students including first-generation, low income, historically underrepresented, transfer, LGBTQ, and students of color. This position must be skilled in addressing the needs of re-entry students, students in crisis, and students experiencing scholastic difficulty. The Academic and Career Advisor must also demonstrate respect for all individuals, welcome diversity among students and colleagues, and actively work toward an inclusive and equitable workplace.

The Academic and Career Advisor works in a fast-paced, drop-in and appointment-based office setting delivering advising services on a year-round basis in both one-on-one and group settings. The Academic and Career Advisor collaborates with faculty, officers of administration, classified staff, and student employees to support the Ballmer Institute student advising needs. This position works externally in close cooperation with other support services on both the Eugene and Portland campuses (e.g., Undergraduate Education and Student Success, Registrar's Office, Admissions, Financial Aid, International Affairs, and departmental offices) and works closely with our community college partners.

The Academic and Career Advisor position reports to the Associate Director, Ballmer Institute, and is located at UO Portland.

Although the Ballmer Institute will ultimately be located in North East Portland, current operations will be housed at the existing UO Portland building in Old Town.
