Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applications from qualified individuals for a clinical-track or tenure-track position in small animal orthopedic surgery at faculty rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. This position is primarily focused on orthopedic surgery, but a small animal surgeon with the interest and skill to do both general surgery and orthopedic surgery is encouraged. The orthopedic service at Auburn University is committed to excellence in clinical service, teaching of professional veterinary students, and resident training. The surgery service is composed of orthopedic surgery, small animal soft tissue surgery, and oncological surgery. The surgery services are complemented by specialists in small animal medicine, medical and radiation oncology, emergency critical care, anesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, neurology, radiology, avian and exotic medicine, small animal and equine ophthalmology, equine medicine and surgery, sports medicine, food animal medicine and surgery, equine, food animal and small animal theriogenology, dairy medicine, and pathology.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in teaching, clinical service, outreach, and research. Teaching responsibilities include the clinical and didactic instructional activities of the professional veterinary medicine and postgraduate training programs related to orthopedic and soft tissue surgery. Clinical service responsibilities will depend on the candidate’s interests and qualifications and could include assignment to both general surgery and orthopedic surgery, if desired. A tenure track candidate would be expected to develop a scholarly program in addition to provision of clinical service (40-50% clinical service assignment in the tenure track). Clinical service includes clinical care of patients, teaching veterinary medical students and interns, resident training, and consultation with private practitioners.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants for the position must hold a DVM or equivalent degree and Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, European College of Veterinary Surgeons, or completion of a residency program is required at the time the appointment begins. The ability to interact with a wide variety of faculty and students in a professional and collegial manner is required. Participation in shared afterhours emergency surgery back-up is required. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Eligibility for faculty veterinary licensure in the State of Alabama is also required.
