Job Summary

Responsible for assisting the costume designer in all aspects of costume design, including construction of costumes from scratch, pulling costumes from stock, procuring costumes from outside sources, and all fittings.

Assist the costume professor during the practical portions of costuming class. Oversee all student workers and those fulfilling production requirement hours in the Costume Shop.

Maintain all costume construction and storage areas.

Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Knowledge/Expertise (Specific Field):
  • Build theatre production costumes: translate from design, pattern drafting, draping & construction. Hair/Wigs styling for costume, washing, maintenance & storage.
  • Manage use and upkeep of all costume shop machinery: standard sewing machines, sergers, blind hemmer, grommet press, professional iron, and steamer.
  • Textile manipulation: dyeing, printing, painting.

Management Skills
  • Manage general running & upkeep of costume shop: cleaning, organization, inventory supplies, keep running list of needs/wants.
  • Update & maintain substantial costume inventory: document items, cleaning, repair, organization & storage.
  • Time management of all tasks in pre-production timeline (measurement of actors done with 3rd party present, set-up costume rack organized by each actor/character, keep running “to do” list, pulling of existing costumes & accessories, construction of mock-ups & final costumes, costume fittings, alterations to existing costumes, preparation of dressing lists, managing student tasks)
  • Manage production run tasks (prepare schedule of costume/wardrobe staff for run, supervise care & use of all costumes, transportation of costumes (to & from), laundering & pressing of costumes during run, wig styling care when used, emergency repairs, supervise wardrobe crew students)
Instructional Skills
  • Supervise student workers & students of Intro to Costuming
  • Assist/instruct students in methods of costume construction.
  • Tally and record costume shop hours logged by students for Intro to Costuming & CCRI Players
  • Manage student tasks in pre-production and supervise wardrobe crew in production
Departmental Support:
  • General support of Costume Designer
  • Complete forms for borrowed costumes & donations, write thank you letters for donations.
  • Attend production meetings as possible within work schedule
  • Other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelors degree in Theatre or Fashion
  • 3 years experience working in a theatrical costume shop
  • Experience in management and supervision of students
  • A minimum of five years’ cutting, draping, patterning, and stitching experience.
  • Must have background in use of industrial sewing machines.
  • Basic computer literacy, Excel and Word required.

Demonstrated ability in basic costume research and literacy in basic costume history
Demonstrated collaboration with a diverse group of theatre professionals and learners
