Summer Refugee Youth Project Instructor

Description/Job Summary

General Summary:

This position is responsible for providing instruction to 9th-11th grade students enrolled in the Refugee Youth Project’s summer school program at Patterson High School. Responsibilities include teaching, development of instructional materials, student assessment, and following student record keeping processes and procedures.

Our program runs from July 5th, 2022- August 11th, 2022; Monday- Thursday.

Instructors will be required to attend an orientation prior to the program start date either via Zoom or in person.

Responsibilities/Duties

Essential Job Functions:
  • Provide career readiness and college prep programming and supplementing academic instructions for 9th-11th grade students
  • Implement and teach multiple 1.5-hour daily lessons to students
  • Integrate community volunteers into the classroom, supervising and utilizing their presence effectively
  • Maintain a positive learning environment
  • Ensure the safety of students at all times; adhere to all CDC and City School protocols regarding Covid-19
  • Maintain the organization and cleanliness of classrooms and other spaces
  • Maintain punctuality, attendance, and provide notification to supervising staff when appropriate
  • Attend trainings, events, and meetings for after school programs (occasionally outside of regular hours)
  • Keep records for program in accordance with requirements
Scope of Responsibility:

Knows the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures as it relates to student advancement for the division and the college at large. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department.

Decision Making:

On a regular basis, exercises judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people and quality of services within the functional area.

Communication:

Exchanges non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate. Require good oral and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting in normal seated position for extended periods of time.

Reaching by extending hand(s) or arms in any direction.

Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

Ability to see within normal parameters.

Ability to hear within normal range.

Ability to move about.

Required Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education and 1-3 years working in education.
Experience :
  • Experience working with youth with limited English skills preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment a plus.
  • Experience working with and supervising volunteers a plus, but not required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field and 5-7 years working in education.
