Job Summary:

One field technician needed to assist with an ongoing small mammal trapping project in northern Wisconsin. Technician would be helping collect data for a long-term study looking at how small mammal communities are affected by forest management, forest structure, and seasonal influences. Animals will be captured using Sherman live traps and processed in the field. The data collected in this study will be used to inform forest management and understand how climate change is affecting small mammal communities in northern forests. The project is a collaboration between the University of Wisconsin, the US Forest Service, Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, and Wisconsin DNR.
Responsibilities include:
Capturing and processing small mammals using Sherman live traps
Driving and navigating using 4wd vehicles
Collecting and maintaining data in the field and entering data daily
Cleaning/repairing traps

Responsibilities:

Conducts research experiments with limited supervision. Provides technical support with some degree of independence for research projects and/or labs under moderate supervision.
  • 15% Inspects and maintains equipment, supplies, inventory, and facility spaces
  • 80% Collects data and monitors test results according to established research requirements and specifications
  • 5% Reviews data to summarize results for presentations or reporting

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree

Qualifications:

Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
Applicants must have a strong interest in wildlife ecology and be willing to work unconventional hours outdoors in all weather conditions, including intense heat and rain, while maintaining a positive attitude. Applicants must have experience handling small mammals and/or be willing to learn new techniques required to safely handle and process live animals in the field. Applicants should be comfortable hiking short/moderate distances with gear.

License/Certification:

Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards
