POSITION
Northeastern Illinois University’s (NEIU) Department of Counselor Education is seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling and/or Couple and Family Counseling starting in the fall of 2022. We strive to be a University that is committed to racial equity and diversity throughout our scholarship, service, mentorship, and teaching. The ideal candidate will share Northeastern’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. We currently enroll around 7,200 students, the majority of whom are from racially minoritized populations. 37.4% of NEIU’s students are Latinx, 10.2% are African-American, 0.2% are Native Hawaiian, 8.5% are Asian-American, 0.1% Native American, 30.6 % are White, and 1.8% are multiracial.

In 1997, NEIU was designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the University has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. As such, our incoming faculty should meaningfully reflect on our rich and diverse student composition and be able to articulate how they will contribute to an enriching learning environment that strives for equitable student outcomes. We are looking for candidates with experience in meeting the needs of our large and growing Latinx student body and our diverse student community.

UNIVERSITY BACKGROUND
Founded in 1867, Northeastern Illinois University enrolls about 7,000 students through the College of Arts and Sciences, the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education, the College of Business and Management and the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Northeastern is regarded as the most diverse public comprehensive university in the Midwest and is designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and a Minority Serving Institution (MSI). Northeastern offers more than 40 undergraduate degree and certificate programs and more than 50 graduate degree, certificate, licensure and endorsement programs.

Northeastern Illinois University's Main Campus is located on 67 acres in a residential area on the Northwest Side of Chicago. The University has three additional locations in the metropolitan area: Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies, El Centro and the Center for College Access and Success. Northeastern also is a founding member of the University Center of Lake County consortium campus in suburban Lake County, north of Chicago.

DEPARTMENT BACKGROUND
The Department of Counselor Education (CACREP accredited) offers four master’s level programs with emphasis in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Couple and Family Counseling, School Counseling, and Rehabilitation Counseling. The department strives to remain committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout our scholarship, service, advocacy, leadership, mentorship, and teaching. Therefore, we seek candidates who advocate for social justice and antiracist policies, and utilize culturally relevant teaching, clinical practice, research, and service. We are dedicated to preparing counselors who are leaders and advocates in social justice and who will provide professional counseling services to adults, children, youth, individuals, couples, groups, and families.

DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the Department of Counselor Education at Northeastern Illinois University is to provide a quality graduate education in Clinical Mental Health, Couple and Family, Rehabilitation, and School Counseling. Through a reflective, collaborative pedagogical approach, graduate students acquire transformative as well as culturally-sensitive knowledge and skills that promote personal, interpersonal, and professional development. The program trains graduate students to become skilled counselors in a diverse and changing world.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Teach both Clinical Mental Health Counseling and/or Couple and Family Counseling courses as well as across the graduate Counseling curriculum
• Advise Counseling students
• Develop and implement culturally sustaining curriculum
• Contribute to assessment, evaluation, and accreditation of Counselor Education programs
• Engage in on-going scholarly activity and disseminate research findings via presentations and publications
• Participate in Department, College, and University activities
• Participate in professional activities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• An earned doctorate in Counselor Education from a CACREP-accredited program
• Established Counselor Educator identity
• Professional LCPC/LMFT licensure or eligibility for licensure in the state of Illinois
• Demonstrated experience across a variety of settings with diverse individuals
• Evidence of effective teaching at the graduate level
• Evidence of research and scholarship productivity
• Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and diversity
• ​​The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about culturally-responsive pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging students who are historically underrepresented and underserved in traditional classrooms. At a minimum, candidates should understand how historical patterns of oppression have shaped these groups’ experiences, especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous Clinical Mental Health counseling and/or Family/Marriage counseling experience
• Acquired LCPC/LMFT licensure in the state of Illinois
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness and ability to teach across core counseling courses
• Experience providing clinical supervision in an academic setting
• Membership and involvement in professional organizations such as ACA, AAMFT, or ACES
• Experience advising graduate students
• Knowledge of CACREP-accreditation process
• Recent experience working with Latinx, African American, and other underserved or minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes; willingness to examine and re-mediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support minoritized students; experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom; experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching, particularly as it relates to the relevance of students' lives, interests, and communities; demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within courses and classrooms; and demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.

STARTING DATE: August 2022

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
