Undergraduate Nursing (Campus) - Adjunct Faculty - Lab Instructors

The adjunct lab instructor will prepare students for the clinical experience through an orientation to policies and procedures, conduct a review with students of prerequisites for individual clinical rotations, and become acquainted with faculty requirements for clinical site experiences. (Each student will have the clinical requirements practice reviewed, as well as prerequisite coursework completed, prior to entry into the clinical workplace).

The lab instructor will make known to students in writing and online, the goals and requirements of each course, the nature of the course content and the methods of evaluation to be employed. A clear understanding of the legal liability of the preceptor/clinical instructor role and the purpose of clinical seminar will be reviewed with the students during the first synchronous session and in the course syllabus. Students will apply, synthesize and evaluate content from nursing theory and sciences in the clinical practice setting. Students will work with patients from across the life span.

Lab instructors must have a minimum of a BSN with 5 years of experience or an MSN or be matriculated in a Master's in Nursing program. Lab instructors must be licensed in Massachusetts, as indicated in the employment agreement. It is up to the lab instructor to obtain and maintain all assigned licenses throughout the course of their assignment.

Specific Duties

  • Attend a faculty orientation at Simmons at the beginning of the semester and all team meetings with the Course Coordinator throughout the semester.
  • Implement academic and professional standards set forth in the School of Nursing Student Handbook.
  • Adhere to all policies set forth in the School of Nursing Faculty Handbook.
  • Assume responsibility of classroom teaching and the clinical supervision of 6-10 students per lab.
  • Plan and select appropriate clinical experiences which will meet the stated course objectives and student learning needs.
  • Participate in the selection of instructional materials, library resources, and equipment for the learning resource center.
  • Evaluate students' written assignments as designated by course coordinator.
  • Maintain evaluative records of student clinical performance and conference with students regarding their progress at mid-term and end of semester.
  • Maintain communication with the course coordinator on a regular basis regarding student clinical progress.
  • Mentor and serve as a role model for undergraduate students.
  • Alert students to focus on problematic areas early thereby providing each student an opportunity to refine skills.
  • Demonstrate attitudes and qualities consistent with the ethics of the health professions including:
    • Leadership skills in the area of peer review
    • Quality assurance
    • Community involvement while promoting the health of population groups
    • Respect for the student's faculty, curriculum, and program
  • Prepare summary evaluation of student performance at termination of course, review with student, and submit signed forms to course coordinator.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of course activities at the termination of the course.
  • Professional, community, and scholarly activities are encouraged.
  • Other duties as assigned from the Director of the Undergraduate Nursing program
