This posting is to hire multiple positions within the University Advising department, and opportunities are available in both Flagstaff and Phoenix (N Valley). Individuals may meet 1:1 with students within an office setting, or with larger groups of students in various locations around campus. Some evening/weekend work may be necessary to support student programming.

Job Description

This position works within the University Advising team to augment existing student support provided to NAU (Northern Arizona University) students. Leveraging holistic expertise about the institution's policies and processes and personalized connections with students, this position will adopt a proactive approach to facilitate student success at NAU for assigned students. This position, critical to our future vision of providing equitable postsecondary value, designs structured, and personalized interventions intended to connect students with institutional resources most valuable to them. This will require extensive expertise in and application of student development/coaching/mentoring practices and skills in building relationships with students. Assessment of student behaviors and skills as they relate to successful completion of their educational goals will be translated into student success plans. Regular connections with the student to support progress throughout the academic year will inform adjustments and success metrics.

Student Support - 45%
  • Individualized Student Relationship Management of assigned caseload.
  • Serve as a resource, advocate, and mentor for assigned students as they strive to balance education, employment, family, health, and/or other life responsibilities and challenges.
  • Assess the student's stage of development (academic, career and personal) and promote student growth by determining suitable developmental tasks; assist students in the establishment of realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
  • Develop meaningful relationships with students based on empathy, compassion, and appreciative, developmental, and intrusive advising approaches.
  • Proactively connect with students at intervals most appropriate to each student's unique needs to understand the challenges they face. Assess their adjustment to school and provide coaching and support.
  • Work in conjunction with campus resources to assist students in navigating complex circumstances, support resources etc. (health, student affairs, academic affairs etc.)
  • Collaborate with various campus partners to identify strategies for student retention and success.
  • Facilitate workshops/trainings to assist students in their development as a university student.
  • Systematically and creatively engage with learners to ensure their success and retention.
  • Teach decision-making strategies and problem-solving skills to students by modeling and example.
  • Work closely with academic advisor, faculty, and other support teams to facilitate student success for assigned caseload.
  • Participate as an active member of the University Advising team through collaborating with assigned advisors, taking on high-need cases by request from advising team, and supporting academic advisors by increasing the capacity available to support students who require additional support and time.
  • Take proactive measures to ensure prompt resolution of any potential obstacles, respond to student questions and concerns. Work with students to resolve all issues to ensure ongoing satisfaction with program and successful progress to degree completion.

Caseload Management - 25%
  • Manage a caseload of students documenting and reporting on obstacles, success plans and overall persistence.
  • Utilize outreach lists strategically to identify students who may be struggling and/or may benefit from additional support. Collaborate with the student's existing support team to determine the best course of action.
  • Document and share interactions in university systems to ensure all support units have access to appropriate updates/status.
  • Accountable for specific advising and coaching metrics and key performance indicators.
  • Evaluate transcripts from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to degree program. Assist with process to apply any applicable credit to satisfy degree requirements.
  • Provide updates/reporting on the progress and challenges of the students within the caseload as needed.

Program Design - 25%
  • Design, implement and evaluate services that provide innovative, meaningful, and supportive experiences to students that integrate academic learning and individual growth. These experiences may be designed for groups of students or individually.
  • Uses aptitude and/or other assessments to help students explore their interests, skills, and abilities.
  • Develop, plan, promote, execute, and evaluate programming designed to encourage engagement, growth, and persistence seeking to provide a full and well-rounded university experience.
  • Create prescriptive assignments/expectations for students based on their circumstances/individual needs.
  • Assess student progress and programming measured both quantitatively (retention, persistence, grades etc.) and qualitatively through student experience surveys and other reflective feedback.

Other - 5%
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate bachelor's degree.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advance degree preferred.
  • Experience and familiarity with student development theories, retention, and success practices in higher education, NAU student resources and policies.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Salary range begins at $47,634. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
