Sr. Electronic Lab Technician

About the Opportunity

The Senior Electronic Lab Tech position in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department's will have job duties that include: (1) Working safely with, in, and around electrical equipment. (2) Assembling/installing equipment or parts requiring wiring, soldering, or connecting. (3) Performing tasks/tests. (4) Configuring, operating and adjusting various test equipment within the MIE teaching labs. (5) Recording and reporting test data as it pertains to teaching lab needs. (6) Conducting circuit troubleshooting on various electronic devices. (7) Troubleshooting, modifying, and adjusting experimental circuitry prototypes, as well as solving practical and technical problems. (8) Supporting and, when needed, overseeing the work of students in the MEIE Capstone Design courses particularly in construction and testing of electronic assemblies. (9) Providing assistance to students when needed by: (i) providing safety oversight for electric- and electronic-based projects, (ii) advising and mentoring during project work, (iii) managing and loaning out sensors and data acquisition systems, (iv) advising on sensor selection, and (v) troubleshooting electronic issues. (10) Following specific instructions regarding assembly, construction, or repair of equipment/parts, and may service or repair lab instruments/equipment. (11) Supporting the undergraduate laboratory classes and lab safety by performing tasks that may include: (i) preparing samples, (ii) solving technical problems, (iii) training and supervising teaching assistants, (iv) instructing students in designing, and troubleshooting sensors (e.g., Arduino-based), (v) assisting in development of new lab experiments, (vi) coordinating new equipment acquisition and installation, (vii) ordering supplies, and (viii) ensuring safe laboratory environments and practices. (12) May include support of faculty research and labs via tasks including: (i) solving electronics/equipment problems for research labs, (ii) advising researchers on sensor and data acquisition issues, (iii) maintaining laboratory equipment, and (iv) training graduate researchers in how to use shared equipment as needed.

Minimum of 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Vocational training/technical certification in electrical controls or similar area is preferred. This Senior Electronic Lab Technician must demonstrate: (1) Programming experience including: Arduino, Raspberry PI, and some circuit design and sensor selection. (2) Proficiency with MS office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point). (3) Ability to train/instruct/mentor students and teaching assistants. (4) Ability to fabricate samples for mechanical/electrical testing. (5) Knowledge of mechanical/electrical testing equipment. (6) Knowledge of power supplies and safe operation. (7) Ability to work with and coordinate with needed offices including environmental health and safety (EHS), facilities, risk management. (8) Must have flexibility to work occasional evening timeframe or Saturday.
