Haverford College invites applications to our available full-time, exempt, benefit-eligible Digital Scholarship Librarian position.

The Digital Scholarship Librarian creatively engages in the support of faculty and students involved in digital scholarship. Participates in the development of digital projects and collections, and collaborates with Research, Instruction, and Digital Scholarship Services (RIDSS) colleagues to provide a full range of reference, instruction, collection management, preservation, and metadata services for all areas of digital scholarship. Supports and serves as a resource to colleagues in developing digital projects. Contributes to and supports the digital and online presence of the Libraries through the investigation, implementation, and enhancement of tools that assist with research, instruction, and scholarship. Actively participates in and contributes to the Tri-College Digital Scholarship Group.

Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provides strong reference services and support of faculty and students in the area of digital scholarship.
  • Partners with faculty, students, and library staff on digital scholarship projects in all stages including design, proposal, development, maintenance, and preservation; brings together appropriate collaborators possessing an array of disciplinary and technical strengths.
  • Leads instruction of workshops for digital scholarship tools and methods for faculty, students, and library staff.
  • Coordinates with Information Technology staff to maintain computing infrastructure and contributes to the planning of future needs.
  • Ensures best practices for digital project development, production, and sustainability.
  • Researches emerging trends and tools of digital scholarship; develops, tests, and implements potential tools for use in digital scholarship initiatives.
  • Coordinates instruction and development of curriculum for the Digital Scholarship Fellows program
  • Provides leadership for the development and integration of technologies to enhance the Libraries' research and instruction services.
  • Provides training for RIDSS staff and students in various aspects of digital scholarship technologies
  • Hires and manages student workers during the academic year and for the summer project period
  • Evaluates feasibility of proposed projects and initiatives within the local environment; ensures that assessment plans are developed as part of any new initiatives.
  • Engages in the assessment of user behavior and needs related to digital scholarship.
  • Manages content for the Digital Scholarship section of the Libraries' website.
  • Advises on library policy issues raised by digital resources such as copyright, intellectual freedom, fair use, e-privacy concerns or censorship of Internet content.
  • Participates in the development of Tri-College technology projects and working groups.
  • Remains current with advances in information technology's impact on libraries and digital scholarship. Actively contributes to the profession.
  • Familiarity with academic and scholarly research practices.
  • Demonstrates initiative in developing projects.
Line of Report: The Digital Scholarship Librarian reports to the Associate Librarian of the College and Coordinator of Research, Instruction, and Digital Scholarship Services who reports to the Librarian of the College. Students report to the Digital Scholarship Librarian.

Education, Training, & Experience:

Required:
  • One of the following: M.S., M.L.S., M.A.; candidates with a B.A. or B.S. with strong programming skills will also be considered. Hired candidate without a M.L.S./M.S will receive partial financial support to pursue one.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and facilitation of teamwork.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Web development using PHP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript, and familiarity with content management systems such as Omeka, Wordpress, and Drupal
  • Demonstrated experience with Python programming language and Django web framework or capacity to acquire these skills quickly.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of key issues related to databases and information access and management.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging technologies in digital and Web-based library services
  • Strong analytical skills; strong understanding of research methods.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends with a record of achievement in digital scholarship and services.
  • Self-directed and collaborative. Goal-oriented.
Preferred:
  • Proficiency in an academic discipline.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GIS technologies and web mapping platforms.
  • Experience with library technology, reference, instruction, and outreach services.
  • Experience with system administration and web servers. Experience developing and troubleshooting applications using scripting, programming, and database languages.
