Haverford College invites applications to our available exempt, full time (at least 37.5 hours per week), benefit eligible, fixed term Research Technician in The Been Laboratory of Behavioral Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology at Haverford College.

This position is supported by a federal research grant. The position is offered for an initial one year term, with the possibility of renewal for a second year pending successful performance and available continued funding. Research in the lab focuses on the impact of hormone fluctuations on behavioral changes and neuroplasticity in rodent models. The NIH-funded project will specifically assess the effects of postpartum estrogen withdrawal on mesolimbic brain circuitry and motivated behaviors in mice.

Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities:

Following initial training by the Principal Investigator, the technician will work in coordination with the Principal Investigator and undergraduate researchers to conduct and implement all experimental aspects of the funded project. These include (but are not limited to) surgical procedures; daily hormone injections; behavioral testing; using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry to measure dopamine release in a brain slice preparation; processing and immunohistochemical analysis of brain tissue; microscopy; and data processing and statistical analyses. The technician will also assist with maintaining compliance with internal and external regulatory agencies (IACUC, USDA, OLAW), may be included the on-call Animal Safety Officer rotation; and will participate in animal husbandry, monitoring lab supplies, and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Line of Report: The research technician will report to Laura Been, Assistant Professor of Psychology.

Education, Training, & Experience:

This position requires a bachelor's degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or a related field, with at least one year of relevant research experience, including research experience with rodents. The ideal applicant will have excellent organizational skills, strong writing skills, and the ability to multi-task and work independently. Prior experience with fast scan cyclic voltammetry orex vivorecording is preferred, but not required. The ability/desire to work on teams with undergraduate students and other research support staff is critical.

  • Crouching/Stooping (to bend upper body forward while fully flexing knees):Up to three hours
  • Kneeling (to maintain upper body in erect position while resting knees on ground):Up to three hours
  • Climbing (to ascend or descent heights using ladders, scaffolding, stairs, poles, inclined surfaces):Up to three hours
  • Twisting (to rotate upper body while feet remain stationary):Up to three hours
  • Driving (operating a motor vehicle, crane, tractor, forklift, etc.):Up to three hours
  • Exposure Limitation (i.e. Cold weather, dust, gas, fumes, etc. ): Three to six hours

-Possession of a valid U.S. Drivers' License and ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Record check are required
