Shenandoah University seeks applicants for a Staff Accountant position. This is a salaried, benefitted position located on our main campus in Winchester, VA whose usual hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm .



The Staff Accountant position reports directly to the Assistant Controller and is responsible for applying principles of accounting to institutional, state and federal expenditures, including Title IV financial aid and scholarship programs. They monitor account balances, prepare adjusting journal entries, perform reconciliations, and create and produce a variety of financial reports.

Responsibilities:
  • Monitors grants, scholarships, work-study and loan expenditures, encumbrances, allocations, receivables, etc., based on various reports and disbursement schedules.
  • Compiles and analyzes federal, state and institutional financial aid and scholarship information to draw down funding, as applicable, and post journal entries.
  • Analyzes financial aid and scholarship reports detailing funding information and prepares reports that summarize and interpret current and projected financial/fund positions.
  • Posts monthly and year-end financial journal entries related to purchase orders, invoices and purchasing card expenditures
  • Manages and monitors all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs statistical analyses to determine trends, estimates, and the impact of significant changes to all types of funds. Prepares narrative reports that explain findings and recommendations.
  • Maintains necessary working papers and supporting documentation related to journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Assists with various special projects as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills

Required Qualifications:

This entry-level position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Degree in Business Administration with 15 credit hours in accounting from four-year College or University. Bi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Previous experience working in a college or university environment

  • Ability to handle information in a confidential and professional manner.
