Mission or Goal of Unit: The Department of Anesthesiology is committed to delivering the best possible anesthetic and critical care to our patients, to advancing research and quality improvement in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine and training the next generation of anesthesiologists through our residency and fellowship programs along with medical student teaching.

Chief Purpose of this position: We are seeking candidates for a Regional Anesthesia/ Acute Pain fellowship position. The regional anesthesia fellows will have responsibilities in the following four domains: the block procedural service, the pain management consult service, acute pain, management research projects, resident didactic education related to regional anesthesia and pain medicine. The Regional Anesthesia fellow will also be tasked with providing care to patients at VCU Health as assigned by the Pain Fellowship Director, the Department Chair or Chair’s delegate. This includes preanesthetic evaluation, intraoperative anesthetic care, postoperative rounds, resuscitation, therapeutic/diagnostic nerve blocks, and consultation in cases of chronic pain.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Clinical: The fellow will be part of the pain management consult service. This consult team offers post-operative pain management services for patients with indwelling nerve catheters and for patients whose pain control is too difficult to be managed by their primary service. The fellows will join a team that currently consists of an attending anesthesiologist, a nurse practitioner, resident physicians, and registered nurses.
  • Education: The fellow will receive didactic instruction and will also play an important role in resident didactic education in the field of regional anesthesia and pain medicine.
  • Research: The fellow is expected to play a large role and be involved/lead acute pain management research projects as assigned by the Regional Anesthesia/ Acute Pain Fellowship Director.
Required Qualifications:
  • MD or DO degree
  • ABA Board eligible/certified in Anesthesiology
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
  • Good communication, clinical and teaching skills
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a fellow at VCU Health
