Job Summary

The Division of Student Affairs at Auburn University is seeking candidates for the position of Coordinator, Campus Recreation (Group Fitness) to oversee the group fitness program by providing educational and recreational opportunities to students, faculty, and staff. The group fitness program consists of group fitness classes, special events, welllness programming, training, development, and evaluation of student fitness instructors.

Essential Functions

Oversees the day-to-day operations of the group fitness program, policies, procedures, and supervision of group fitness instructors. Teaches group fitness classes and develops student group fitness instructors in teaching skills

Assists with the planning and review of programs, strategies, and schedules for group fitness, including class registrations, attendance records, equipment upkeep, program assessment, and the planning and implementation of three signature events annually.

Monitors the budget ensuring policies and procedures are followed regarding revenues, expenses, and reimbursements.

Oversees multiple group fitness spaces, equipment and materials, ensuring a safe environment for fitness activities. Maintains an equipment replacement plan for group fitness equipment.

Coordinates personnel activities (for students) to include personnel action, staffing operations, pay scales and evaluations. This includes recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, evaluating, and developing all student fitness instructors.

Research fitness industry trends and incorporate new and current programming to develop action plans and marketing strategies to increase active numbers, attract new participants, and retain participants of group fitness programming.

Compiles statistical data and provides and maintains reports used in the assessment and revision of goals, policies, and procedures.

Assists with the development, implementation, and monitoring of short and long range plans while maintaining the vision, mission and values of the group fitness program, Campus Recreation and the Division of Student Affairs.

Provide administrative support for Campus Recreation which includes regular monitoring of staff time and verification of payroll, coordination of special fitness events, and record keeping.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

Field of Study

Recreation, Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Business, Exercise Science, or related field

Area of Experience

Experience in sports or recreational programming working in a collegiate/community recreational environment.

Requirements for Additional Job Levels

Level II requires a Bachelor’s degree in a discipline appropriate to position plus 2 years of experience in sports or recreational programming working in a collegiate/community recreational environment.

Level III requires a Bachelor’s degree in a discipline appropriate to position plus 4 years of experience in sports or recreational programming working in a collegiate/community recreational environment.

Education Level

When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.

Minimum Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of planning, management, scheduling and oversight of group exercise activities is required.

Minimum Technology Skills

Minimum License and Certifications
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications within 90 days of employment
  • Certification in group exercise from NCAA accredited organization such as AFAA, ACE, ACSM, and/or NETA
Desired Qualifications

Desired Qualifications
  • RYT200 in yoga
  • Pilates Mat Certification
  • Extensive experience teaching multiple group exercise formats
  • Knowledge of Innosoft Fusion, When to Work, assessment software, and IM Leagues software
  • Experience in a collegiate recreation setting
  • Experience in leading small group fitness training
  • Experience teaching barre style fitness formats
