Job Summary:

This position is in the Communicable Disease Division (CDD) of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). The employee in this position functions within a team of microbiologists and lab technicians in the under limited supervision. Duties of the position include, but are not limited to, independently performing manipulation of patient and reference samples, entering specimen data and communications into the CDD Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), generating worksheets, laboratory reports and performing other routine laboratory activities. This position participates in ongoing quality improvement/quality assurance activities and may participate with the instruction of visiting laboratorians, students and medical personnel in laboratory procedures. This position may also participate in new method development, test costing analyses, method evaluation, method validation and writing of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as needed. Routine work hours are 7:45 am to 4:30 pm Tuesday through Friday, 6:00 - 3:15 pm Saturday. Rotational weekend (Sunday), holiday and emergency response work is also required.

Responsibilities:

Performs testing services within a microbiology laboratory including human, animal, and plant diagnostics, surveillance, screening, environmental monitoring, and forensic science to report clear and concise testing results.
  • 30% Prepares specimens for scientific examination and analysis and/or prepares the laboratory for accreditation audits/inspections
  • 5% Operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation and information management systems
  • 10% Prepares, reviews, verifies, and reports test result data
  • 5% Prepares technical reports
  • 30% Communicates with internal and external stakeholders as needed
  • 5% Supports and/or trains new employees, students, and other professional colleagues
  • 5% Participates in educational and outreach activities and other professional development
  • 10% Other tasks as assigned (including but not limited to: data entry, records retention, inventory control).

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
in Medical Microbiology, Medical Technology, Bacteriology, Biology or equivalent. Ability to meet CLIA Laboratory Testing Personnel Standards required.

Qualifications:

Certification Requirements: Ability to pass Select Agent Certification required. Ability to pass a visual color screening test required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Medical Technology, Microbiology, Virology, and/or Immunology college-level laboratory course work required. Clinical microbiology laboratory experience preferred. Public health laboratory experience preferred.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Additional Information:

A successful visual color screening test is required prior to an offer of employment. Routine work hours are 7:45 am to 4:30 pm Tuesday through Friday, 6:00 - 3:15 pm Saturday, occasional Sundays or holidays as required.
