Germantown Friends School is seeking a Director of College Counseling to lead Upper School students through the college search and admissions process. This includes working closely with students, parents, and faculty; promoting a creative, exciting environment around the college-counseling process; encouraging and providing good communication among all constituencies related to the process; and facilitating and nurturing all activities that support the process.
The Director of College Counseling will set the strategy and philosophy of the College Counseling Office at Germantown Friends School in a very challenging college admissions environment.
Specific duties for the Director of College Counseling include:
- Counseling individual students from 10th grade onward in highly personalized ways to learn about a student’s interests, abilities, talents, needs, and ambitions in connection with college or university study.
- Maintaining close contact with the students’ families regarding all aspects of the college-counseling process.
- Discovering and collecting information about the students relating to academics, athletics, co-curriculars, background, and social life as a framework for the school’s official college recommendation prepared by the College Counseling office.
- Advising students about co-curricular opportunities to help grow their passions and strengths.
- Providing financial-aid counseling for students and families.
- Assisting in programming events and workshops that build education around the college-application process.
- Maintaining close contact with admissions personnel in various colleges and universities, understanding the programs of those schools, and promoting visits to GFS by representatives of various colleges and universities.
- Maintaining affiliations with professional organizations in support of the College Counseling program (e.g. NACAC, NAIS, PACIS).
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
The position requires a person who has a passion for working with adolescents and families, who possesses excellent communication skills, and who is highly organized to attend to essential details. Candidates should have substantial experience in either college admissions or secondary-school college counseling.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum five years of experience in college admissions or high school college counseling setting.
- Excellence in writing and public speaking.
- Experience with computer programs, including Cialfo and Google Suite.
