General Summary: Provides innovative, user-centered instruction in information literacy skills, research support, and outreach services. In this entry-level position, this librarian guides students in research methods and resources, conducts library instruction sessions, and is responsible for outreach to specific student populations and student organizations. Serves as a liaison to several academic departments. Reports to the Head of Research & Instruction Services.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Teach in-class workshops in targeted first - year courses that build a solid foundation of information literacy skills, utilizing the ACRL Framework. Work with other librarians to integrate information literacy initiatives into general education courses and the majors.
  2. Look for new opportunities for library instruction by working collegially with faculty in various disciplines.
  3. Conduct library outreach to first-year students, first-generation students, transfer students, and student organizations (e.g., Black Power Book Club, Latinas Unidas, PathMakers).
  4. Assist in evaluating the impact of library instruction efforts.
  5. P rovide general reference services (including in-person, by appointment, by email, via Zoom, and through Chat).
  6. Create and maintain online research guides (LibGuides) in support of learning outcomes.
  7. Manage the scheduling of the research support desk and virtual research services.
  8. Build and maintain a searchable knowledge bank of frequently asked questions (FAQ).
  9. Serve in the rotation of staffing two service desks (Research & Circulation - some evening and Saturday hours required).
  10. Work with faculty in assigned liaison departments to promote library services and discipline-specific resources.
  11. Participate in collection development for assigned liaison areas.
  12. Coordinate library programming, in collaboration with other staff members and the library's student assistants.
  13. Engage in pertinent library initiatives, assessment, and working groups.
  14. Participate in professional development activities to meet personal and departmental goals.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Research & Instruction Services or the Director of Library Services.


REQUIREMENTS

Education: American Library Association-accredited Master's degree.

Minimum Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Experience or interest in working with undergraduate students in an academic library that values customer service and inclusion.
  • Commitment to assessment and the provision of consistently high quality services to library users in a student-centered setting, with new perspectives on existing priorities and challenges.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to set priorities, to work independently and collaboratively, and to adapt to a rapidly changing learning environment.
  • Proficiency in Google apps, Microsoft Office suite, and citation tools.
  • Excited about engaging with students who are broadly diverse with regard to gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, and religion.
  • Values collegiality and collaboration, and thrives in a small, relationship-driven academic environment.

  • Awareness of emerging technologies in libraries; ability to utilize technology to maximize services to users.
  • Familiarity and proficiency in providing reference assistance and effective library instruction sessions.
  • Knowledge of the WMS software's circulation module.
  • Passion for liberal arts education; subject knowledge in the humanities and social sciences or interest in developing in those areas.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, crouching, walking, occasional moving of objects. Work is performed in a library.
