POSITION PURPOSE

Reporting to the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, the DEIA Program Coordinator will serve as an essential member of the Diversity and Inclusion team at Whitman College. The DEIA Program Coordinator will support and contribute to programming emerging from the Division of Diversity and Inclusion's Identity and Belonging units (International Student and Scholar Services, Intercultural Center, LGBTQIA+ Student Services, and Religious and Spiritual Life), as well as assist with the logistics and implementation of DEIA initiatives and programs offered from the Division (DEIA mini-grants, Tri-College gatherings, Third Space Speaker Series, etc.). The DEIA Program Coordinator helps to ensure college programming is responsive to the complex and enmeshed identities of Whitman students, with a particular emphasis on the unmet needs, issues, and concerns of students from communities of color. In addition to program and student support, the DEIA Program Coordinator helps to advance the diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism (DEIA) values of the College and the Division of Diversity and Inclusion.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Program Support and Coordination (60%)
  • Assist with the execution of signature programs coordinated through the Division of Diversity and Inclusion. This includes working with the primary organizer(s) of a collection of annual programs (Freedom Songs, Power & Privilege Symposium, International Orientation, IC Leaders Retreat), a number of intermittent programs (Third Space Speaker Series, Tri-College Student of Color Gatherings), and additional emerging projects.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for faculty, staff, and students regarding DEIA programming.
  • Assist faculty/staff/students in creating DEIA programs and, as needed, support the programs from planning through completion.
  • Serve as a resource to student coalitions and clubs designing and developing programs that are in alignment with institutional DEIA values and goals.
  • Assist in efforts to coordinate and assess DEIA related programs on campus, including facilitating collaborations and identifying resources.
  • Provide guidance and information to assist students in becoming more connected to Whitman College and accessing appropriate resources for support if experiencing academic or personal difficulties.
  • Contribute to and (co)-facilitate Divisional DEIA education and outreach efforts through collaboration on workshops for student and professional staff, participating in student employee training, and engaging with recurring campus programs (Continuing the Conversation).

Administrative (20%)
  • Maintain and coordinate the services for a culturally affirming campus facility.
  • Assist the VPDI in documenting, monitoring, and supporting department/unit progress on DEIA Development Plans.
  • Assist the VPDI with the DEIA mini-grant program, including proposal review, coordination of awards, and assessment of projects.
  • Maintain and coordinate Division-based DEIA resources (food pantry, clothing closet, lending library).
  • Maintain and update Divisional social media and design campaigns to promote Whitman DEIA programs.
  • Serves as a source of information to current and prospective students regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism learning resources available at the college and available online.

Professional Development and Campus Networking (10%)
  • Build and foster vital relationships with colleagues across the campus.
  • Engage in regular professional development activities (e.g. conferences, webinars, publications, etc.) to maintain fluency on DEIA concepts in higher education.

College and Division Service (10%)
  • Serve on institutional committees related to the advancement of inclusive excellence at the College.
  • Periodically serve as an Equity/Inclusion Advocate on staff searches.
  • Complete additional duties as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Bachelor's degree required (Master's degree preferred).
  • Minimum 2 years of full-time, professional experience in higher education or related field (graduate degree in related field can be used in place of 2 years of experience).
  • Experience working with historically marginalized communities.
  • Experience working with college students in a programmatic and advisory capacity.
  • Ability to take initiative for projects and the development of services.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the needs and issues facing students of color in higher education, including the unique operation of enmeshed or layered marginalized identities.
  • Experience studying and advocating for issues of justice.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships.
