Assistant Director, Deaf/Hard of Hearing - Accessibility Services

The Accessibility Services team is looking to hire an Assistant Director of Deaf/Hard of Hearing. We provide communication access and ADA accommodations to promote an inclusive environment and accessible experience for every student.
What you'll be doing

  • Foster an inclusive and accessible environment through collaboration with faculty, staff, and other university departments to develop, improve, and maintain accessibility practices and to facilitate communication access for deaf students and visitors throughout their university experience.
  • Responsibilities include managing staff, materials, and resources related to the Deaf/Hard of Hearing program.
  • Occasional evening/weekend work required.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Deaf studies, vocational rehabilitation, or a closely related field, plus two years of related experience;
OR a combination of education/work experience in the field of Deaf/Hard of Hearing services totaling at least six years.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the American Disability Act, Effective Communication, and related federal regulations, state statutes, and laws.
  • Knowledge of RID Code of Professional Conduct and understanding of Deaf Culture.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL), Cued Speech Transliteration, Signed Exact English, Video Relay, CART, type-well, and speech-to-text technologies.
  • Knowledge of how to interpret audiograms and related disability documentation.



Skills:

  • American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and transliteration.
  • Skilled in the use of technology such as Microsoft Office, virtual meeting software, and the ability to learn new/emerging technology and software.
  • Strong communication skills, conflict resolution skills, problem-solving skills, and ability to interact with diverse populations.

Ability:

  • Ability to work occasional night and weekend hours
  • Ability to work with individuals and departments to assess and reconcile access communication issues.
  • Ability to develop and implement onboarding, training, & evaluation practices for DHOH staff including ASL interpreters, transcribers, and captioners.
  • Ability to stay current in best practices in higher education, Effective Communication, and accessibility.
  • Ability to apply legislative and judicial concepts to the decision-making process to determine and facilitate reasonable accommodation services, academic adjustment, and access.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Fluent in American Sign Language.
  • National Interpreter Certification or Utah State Certification Level 2.
  • Experience as a supervisor and at least one year experience in ASL interpretation, deaf education, or closely related field.
  • Master’s degree or higher in Deaf studies, vocational rehabilitation, or a closely related field.


Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in a typical office environment.
