The University of Wisconsin (UW) System offers a comprehensive benefits package to meet the diverse needs of our community. The University contributes towards the cost of several benefit plans. Employees also receive a vacation package starting at 104 hours during first year, sick leave (with no expiration) at 5 hrs per paycheck, personal holiday (36hrs each year), and paid legal holidays. Employees are considered vested in the retirement system after 5 years (currently matching at 6.6%). We also offer a hybrid work environment of remote and in office workdays after initial onboarding is complete.

Job Summary
This position coordinates payroll and absence management functions for the Shared Services Center (SSC) population. This position provides technical assistance to employees regarding payroll processing and compensation. This position functions as principal SSC liaison between employees, departments, and the central payroll office concerning University Staff, Academic Staff/Limited Appointee, and Student payroll, which includes payroll processing, position funding, leave accounting, monitoring of attendance issues, and performing training on HRS (UWM's Human Resources Information System) Time/Labor system. The Payroll Specialist will be expected to convey regular payroll updates to all division staff. This position will also serve as a Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) coordinator, which includes processing FMLA/WFMLA requests, ensuring compliance of FMLA/WFMLA laws, policies and procedures monitoring of leave usage, and counseling employees on requirements and responsibilities. Knowledge of payroll in a human resources information system, leave accounting, and the federal and state Family Medical Leave Act is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Evidence of knowledge of human resources practices and policies, which may include, hiring, contracting, payroll or recruitment
  • Evidence of knowledge of State and/or Federal regulations applicable to HR administration, regulations, and procedures


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR or related field by date of hire
  • Evidence of successful interactions with a diverse population of individuals
  • Experience working in an HR capacity (e.g., talent management/recruiting, payroll administration, benefits administration, etc.)
  • Strong skills using PC-based spreadsheet, database, and word processing applications for report generation (i.e., Microsoft Office)
  • Proficiency with a variety of HR information systems (e.g., Applicant tracking, Human Resources Information Systems, time/payroll record keeping)
  • Experience functioning as a customer resource responding to routine and complex questions
  • Higher education experience
