Position Summary:
Under general direction of the Construction Manager, assists in the facilitation and implementation of the university's capital construction program. The construction inspector will inspect building construction, installation and repair work for compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and university policies and standards; inspect maintenance and construction projects for the quality of work and schedule compliance; coordinate the work of contractors and vendors with the needs and requirements of the university's role and mission; facilitate the integration of construction efforts with university programs, events, and activities; ensure the implementation of safe construction practices and safe construction work sites; perform related work as required and assist in management and facilitation of construction projects.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience utilizing commercial construction and repair practices, materials, and equipment; coordinating and monitoring construction projects; inspecting and insuring compliance with codes and contracts of commercial building projects; reading commercial blueprints and interpreting plans and specifications.



  • Experience reviewing and interpreting state and local life safety, accessibility, and building codes as they relate to the built environment.

  • Experience communicating with a diverse group of customers.

  • Experience with personal computers and technology.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of five years journey level experience in the construction industry.



  • College level course work or a degree in construction management subjects such as Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling, claims avoidance or estimating.

  • Good knowledge of: state and local building codes regarding mechanical codes; and universal accessibility codes and standards

  • Some experience working with or in the areas of construction contract administration; construction site development; new construction energy conservation requirements; commercial roofing systems installation and maintenance; commercial construction, demolition and remodel procedures.

  • Experience facilitating and coordinating communications amongst groups or team such that all members of the team reach a consensus and have a clear understanding of the team goals and objectives.

  • Good knowledge of: construction safety standards and job site safety best practices.

  • Some knowledge of: asbestos abatement requirements and procedures.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Physical ability to climb ladders, walk across rough terrain, access confined spaces, access roofs, climb over barriers, and navigate construction sites both on the interior and exterior of buildings.



Required Licensures, Certifications or other
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving University vehicles.
