Job Description:

The Environmental Health and Safety Officer will work to maximize the health and safety of faculty, staff, students and visitors. In accordance with regulatory mandates, topics included will be complex technical areas such as hazard control and risk management, occupational safety and health, industrial hazards including, but not limited to, machinery and chemicals, and fire prevention.

The Environmental Health and Safety Officer may work with or have access to professionals with administrative, engineering, chemical, radiation, occupational, environmental, and fire safety credentials and will be prepared to assess, measure, and evaluate potential hazards which the College community may encounter for purposes of developing safety related programs to heighten safety awareness among staff, faculty and students and to fulfill obligations concerning Right To Know/Hazard Communication legislation.

The Environmental Health and Safety Officer will:

  • ensure compliance with SUNY requirements, and local, state and federal level regulations for environmental management and occupational safety and health;
  • supervise and identify the need for monitoring, on a continued basis, for hazards associated with toxic atmospheres, chemicals, flammable liquids, radiation, etc.;
  • inspect and determine that available life safety devices such as fume hoods, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors are in proper supply and working condition;
  • participate in the review of plans and blueprints to ensure that campus planning personnel are in compliance with all pertinent building codes and safety regulations during the planning of new construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of existing facilities, or in the lease or purchase of off-campus facilities;
  • manage, plan, schedule, participate in, and assume the overall responsibility for all safety and safety related inspections of buildings, maintenance operations, dormitories, laboratories, and research areas, construction and facilities rehabilitation sites, storage areas, etc. for the purpose of detecting and appraising unsafe conditions or activities;
  • direct the investigation of accidents, fires, incidents involving hazardous chemicals and any other environmental or safety related concerns;
  • prepare information for presentation to College management and in Civil Courts in cooperation with the Attorney General's Office if required;
  • plan, schedule, and coordinate safety training programs for faculty, staff, and students for any mandated or recommended trainings, such as Right to Know/Hazard Communication, techniques in hazardous materials handling, hazardous waste management, machine and tool safety, laboratory and chemical safety, bloodborne pathogens, the general subjects of fire prevention and occupational and environmental hygiene, and compose relevant training and reference manuals;
  • recommend renovation and/or maintenance projects to improve safety in work, research, and living areas;
  • As needed, respond to campus emergencies after hours;
  • provide compliance reporting to various oversight entities, including EPA, DEC, SUNY, OFPC;
  • coordinate injury reports and accident/fire/chemical spill reporting;
  • serve on the Emergency Management Committee, stay current on FEMA Incident Command modules as identified by campus UPD, participate in Incident Command as appropriate to the scenario;
  • actively participate in College committees;
  • uphold the campus' values, mission, and strategic goals;
  • be a team-oriented member of the campus community, and support a healthy workplace culture;
  • engage in and promote positive and civil organizational behaviors, and a positive campus experience for all.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in a STEM field
  • Minimum of four years of experience in a safety-related position
  • New York State Code Enforcement Official certification, or willingness to obtain certification in the first full calendar year

 

Additional Information:

  • This is an SL-5 position, with a salary range of $65,000 - $75, 000.
  • This is a full-time, 12-month position; eligible for reappointment. 
  • Schedule is typically Monday through Friday, with some evening, weekend and on-call requirements.
