Emerging Leaders – Senior Violence Prevention Specialist
Dr. Thomson, Director of Research at the Injury and Violence Prevention Program (IVPP) at VCU, is accepting applications for a Violence Prevention Specialist. This position is supported by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prevent and reduce community levels of youth violence. This position is located at VCU’s School of Medicine in Richmond Virginia. This role will work with the project aim to implement a comprehensive approach to youth violence prevention at the community-level with the following violence prevention strategy: Emerging Leaders, which offers a brief hospital-based violence intervention followed by 6-months of wrap-around community case management, a firearm safety counseling program, and a psychoeducational workshop series for youth who have experienced an intentional or violence-related injury.

Description of the Project:
The Prevention Specialist will provide hospital and community-based services to patients within the VCU Health System who are high-risk or have experienced intentional violent injury through assessment, crisis intervention and counseling.



Duties Include:
Working with VCU Health System staff to identify at-risk youth and to engage youth and their families in a positive youth development program
Working with hospital and community providers to participate in connecting at-risk youth and families to appropriate services and resources
Providing ongoing case management and follow-up services post-discharge
Planning and facilitating purposeful and engaging activities for youth to participate in (e.g., workshops)
Performing research and program-related duties as needed
Conducting assessments for research purposes



Required Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or another related field
Ability to understand and work with high-risk youth and their families, including violently-injured patients
Knowledge of child/adolescent service system
Knowledge of positive youth development pathways and ability to provide assessment, counseling, education/support to at-risk youth and families
Ability to work collaboratively with families and community agencies
Successful experience working with young people in an organized programmatic setting
Demonstrated proactive problem solving, teamwork, innovative thinking, creativity, patience, and flexibility
Ability to conduct and assist with group activities, such as group sessions, community events, and focus groups
Demonstrated commitment and ability to support and mentor youth in a positive manner
Knowledge of community resources, human development, and trauma informed practices
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
Must agree to CPS and criminal background check
Dependable transportation required
Demonstrated experience fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so



Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or another related field
Experience with data collection and research studies preferred
Hospital and Richmond community experience preferred
