Position Summary

The Department of Physics at Spelman College invites applications for a Scholar in Residence position in the area of quantum information science. As a part of the IBM - HBCU Quantum Center, we are building a vibrant and expanding community and looking for a candidate to contribute to developing the Georgia quantum ecosystem. The appointment is anticipated to be for one year with strong possibility of renewal for an additional four years. The areas of interest include but are not limited to quantum computational science, quantum condensed matter, quantum information science ( QIS ), and development of quantum-sensing techniques for application to fundamental measurements in other areas such as biophysics, nuclear and particle physics.

The successful candidate is expected to initiate an active research program that includes undergraduates, be a fully integral member of the Physics Department, develop courses for an interdisciplinary minor or major track in QIS, contribute to teaching physics at the undergraduate level and to lead the Georgia ecosystem (Spelman College, Morehouse College and Albany State University) of the IBM - HBCU Quantum Center. This leadership could include developing opportunities for collaborative research, curriculum, and programs across the three institutions that benefit the larger coalition.

We are especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and service, will contribute to the College and to the IBM - HBCU Quantum Center. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field at the time of hire. The anticipated start date is June 1, 2022.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics (or closely related field) and a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and research. Successful candidates are expected to pursue an active research program and teach undergraduate level physics courses.
