Job Description:

The Department of Surgery and the Cardiovascular Center at the University Of Florida College Of Medicine- Jacksonville, is seeking a full-time Cardiothoracic Surgeon to join our practice. This position will report to the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and serve as the Co-chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery and Medical Director of Aortic Surgery.

The successful candidate will receive an appointment at the tenure or non-tenure accruing level of Assistant/Associate Professor/Professor level in the clinical scholar pathway based on their background and experience. The successful candidate will preferably have a minimum 5 years of experience and be able to perform all aspects of adult cardiac and thoracic surgery. The successful candidate should be proficient in multiarterial coronary artery bypass, minimally invasive valve surgery, arrhythmia surgery, surgery for complex valvular heart disease and heart failure, mitral valve repair, aortic valve repair, thoracic aortic surgery, thoracoscopic and robotic lung resection and mediastinal surgery.

UF Cardiothoracic Surgery services are provided at the UF Health Cardiovascular Center – Jacksonville which has fully integrated, comprehensive heart programs, including coronary interventional, nuclear, electrophysiology, non-invasive, and peripheral interventional program. The center is located at UF Health Jacksonville, a 695-bed private, not-for-profit academic health center near Downtown Jacksonville affiliated with the University of Florida. The Cardiothoracic Surgery service handles a wide range of patients and problems in conjunction with a busy cardiology service. The division has been recognized for excellence in bypass procedures and its outcomes have been well above the national average. Our rapidly expanding Cardiovascular Program is focused on the tri-partite mission of education, clinical care and research.

The UF Health Cardiovascular Center is a state-of-the art facility servicing North Florida and South Georgia and is home to 19 full-time faculty, 15 APPs, and 19 cardiology and subspecialty fellows. The cardiothoracic surgery service is currently supported by a Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, five APPs (2 PAs and 3 APRNs) and an RN surgical coordinator. The team also includes fellowship trained cardiac anesthesiologists and 24/7 coverage by board certified surgical critical care providers. The practice supports all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including coronary, valvular, aortic, and arrhythmia, both open and via minimally invasive approaches. There are active structural heart (TAVR, Mitraclip, Watchman) as well as a TEVAR programs with procedures performed using our hybrid operating rooms. Postoperative care is provided in the cardiovascular intensive care unit which is a mixed unit such that patients can stay in the same room as they progress through their care. Board certified intensivists are in house 24/7/365 covering our multiple intensive care units.

The Department of Surgery is home to six divisions (Acute Care Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery/Surgical Oncology, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, and Vascular Surgery) with just over 30 full time faculty members, including two research scientists and two psychologists. The department has ACGME approved residency programs in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care as well as a Fellowship Council approved Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship.

The University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville is the largest of the three colleges at the Health Science Center Jacksonville. The college is affiliated with UF Health in Jacksonville, a health system comprised of two hospitals — the 603-bed UF Health Jacksonville and 92-bed UF Health North — and more than 60 primary and specialty care practices throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. UF Health in Jacksonville is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and is also an American College of Surgeons verified level one trauma center.

The college's 16 clinical science departments house more than 440 faculty members, 1,560 staff and 384 residents and fellows, as well as medical students from UF and around the country. We offer an incredible breadth of clinical training program sand proud to train many of best primary care providers and specialists throughout the region, the state and the country.

The college offers 38 accredited graduate medical education programs and 14 non-standard programs. More than 100 residents and fellows from programs across the U.S. come to UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville to participate in various clinical rotations as well.

In addition to graduate medical education, clinical rotations in all the major disciplines are provided for students from the UF College of Medicine in Gainesville. Third-year medical students enrolled at UF spend about 25 percent of their training at the Jacksonville campus, gaining valuable experience in an urban setting. While third-year rotations are only offered to UF students, elective rotations in the final year of clinical training are available to students from accredited schools in the US and Canada.

For practicing physicians, the college offers a continuing medical education program that recruits national and international speakers who are well known and respected in their fields.

The college's faculty, residents and fellows are active in clinical research. Residents and fellows regularly present and publish their findings at International meetings. In 2019, the campus received $23.1 million in external research funding, approximately 50% of which was federally sponsored projects.

The campus houses a 16,000-square-foot clinical and translational research facility. To support faculty and resident research, the college has a Center for Data Solutions, offering researchers analytics, epidemiology and biostatistics support, and a Center for Research Training, helping develop the next generation of highly collaborative clinical researchers.

Located in the Northeastern Florida on the Atlantic Ocean, Jacksonville has an ideal climate with 320 days of sunshine annually and the coolest summers in the state. Known as the River City, Jacksonville is a major port city with numerous waterways, two Naval bases, several nature preserves, marshes, lakes, wetlands and miles of beaches. Flowing through Jacksonville is the 310-mile St. Johns River, which plays a major role in our work and play.

Expected Salary:

Academic appointment will commensurate with training and level of experience; benefits are excellent.

Minimum Requirements:

Licensed to practice medicine in accordance with Chapter 458, Florida Statutes plus five years of appropriate experience and able to perform all aspects of adult cardiac and thoracic surgery.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Medical Degree – M.D., D.O., or foreign equivalent.
  • Board certified in the appropriate subspecialty.
  • Completion of an accredited residency/fellowship program.
