CONTEXT OF THE JOB

Under the general direction of the Creative Director, the Graphic Designer provides design and visual communication expertise for OCM in support of academic departments, interdisciplinary programs and research centers. A major emphasis is on creating visual materials for a wide variety of media outlets for strategic communications initiatives. The Graphic Designer assists the broader Creative team in all aspects of production design, comprehensive layouts for concept visualization, edits and oversees and coordinates production of final products. Work involves supporting Sr. Art Directors on multiple projects. If you are flexible, ambitious and eager to learn - this is the place you'll be able to grow and flourish.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conceptualize, plan, and create a wide range of visual media, using traditional and digital techniques, for academic departments, programs and centers. Such media includes, but is not limited to: booklets, brochures, folders, newsletters, presentations, displays, exhibits, posters and specialty items.
  • Interact with various clients to interpret and translate their expressed needs and ideas into effective visual forms tailored to the needs of intended audiences.
  • Design the placement and appearance of material for printed or digital output, select typographical formats, and design and plan effective use of color, tone, aesthetic composition, and harmony.
  • Provide support in keeping with production schedules for the various steps in the design process.
  • Inspect proofs for accuracy and adherence to appropriate production standards and suggest improvements as needed.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance, and serve as liaison to production staff, authors, publishers, clients, and/or printing representatives on University graphic standards, copyright requirements, design, and technical graphics issues.
  • Adhere to University Brand Guides as well as policies and procedures governing communications and marketing efforts
  • Email template design and execution.
  • Ensure all digital outreach efforts and products meet University standards for quality and audience comprehension.
  • Actively participate in client meetings, work sessions, and presentations to move others toward a singular, compelling vision.
  • Liaison with University Printing or other vendors.
  • Keep current on software applications and on latest trends in print and digital production.
  • Archive and maintain digital records of finished projects and work individually or as part of a team to organize unit's digital assets.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design or other related field and three years of job-related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of the equipment, principles, and techniques of artistic design and display, as well as current techniques and materials used in graphic illustration.
  • Knowledge of printing industry for preparation and layout of artwork for specific printing and bindery requirements. Understanding of communications technologies and production, including but not limited to printing, exhibit production, and website development.
  • Proficiency using graphics design software (e.g., Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash, QuickTime); desktop publishing software (e.g., InDesign, Illustrator). Intermediate computer skills with proficiency in MS Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Ability to assess situations rapidly in a fast-paced environment and establish cooperative working relationships with other campus units and external vendors.
  • Ability to apply web design principles and techniques to the creation and enhancement of integrated, complex web sites.
  • Ability to think conceptually and articulate ideas well, develop ideas on a given topic or situation, and develop creative ways to solve a problem.
  • Effective organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at a given time and meet deadlines in a productive manner.
  • Knowledge of appropriate copyright and trademark use. Knowledge of proofreading and appropriate style guides preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires the ability to visually match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.
  • Portfolio of relevant marketing or design materials is required at interview stage.
