This is a one year, full time temporary opportunity.

The Counseling Department at Porterville College is seeking a one year full time temporary faculty member for a Wellness Counselor Instructor for Porterville College location. History of Porterville College:

Porterville College was established in 1927 as a part of the Porterville Union High School and College District and has been a unit of the Kern Community College District since July 1, 1967. Porterville College is the northernmost college in the Kern Community College District, which serves an area of some 24,000 square miles in all or portions of Kern, Tulare, Inyo, and San Bernardino Counties.

Porterville College is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), providing educational opportunities for approximately 4,500 full and part time students each year. Our College has been serving the community and providing quality education since its founding.

Porterville College was recently the recipient of the MacKenzie Scott Foundation award and recognized as one of the “Teams Empowering Voices the World Needs to Hear”

Porterville lies against the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in southeast Tulare County. It is the gateway to a vast mountain wonderland and recreational area. Residents enjoy magnificent views of snowcapped mountains in the mild winter while basking in the sun during the hot summer months. There are recreation activities at Lake Success, plenty of outdoor activities in the mountains, and ample family activities year-round and

Porterville is centrally located between southern and northern California metropolitans, with a three-hour drive to Los Angeles and a four-hour drive to San Francisco. It is within three hours commuting time to the seashores of the Pacific. With the lower cost of living and central location in California Porterville is a great area to live.

Representative Duties
Who We Are Looking For:

Porterville College is seeking a dedicated and motivated individuals to provide leadership, engagement, and discipline expertise in continuing to move the program forward in innovative ways.

  • Develop and plans a Mental Wellness program and coordinates wellness activities such as: personal, emotional, and crises counseling of students with mental health needs
  • Provide Mental Wellness services outreach activities to the student population
  • Provide Wellness workshops, education, and trainings
  • Co-lead the College Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)
  • Provide education and consultation to faculty, staff, and administrators with concerns about student mental health issues regarding early identification, intervention and referral of students with mental health needs
  • Represent Wellness Services on college committees
  • Participate in outreach and promotion of campus Wellness services
  • Conducts workshops for students related to health, stress, suicide prevention, and mental health related topics
  • Prepare reports, surveys, and other documents as required by the area administrator
  • Provides and/or organizes in-service training for faculty, and staff regarding Health Services issues and concerns
  • Engage in student-centered design processes to establish and strengthen structures to enable and streamline the delivery of holistic support for students across the continuum, including mental health promotion, prevention, and addressing crises
  • Develop monthly wellness campaigns for students
  • Coordinate Mental Health screenings for students
  • Serves as liaison to campus and/or community agencies, including referral to campus or community agencies and follow-up services
  • Establish partnership(s) with local county behavioral health departments, subcontractors of county behavioral health departments or community based organizations, with the goal of establishing appropriate referral processes for students in need of clinically appropriate mental health supports
  • Provide crisis intervention and emergency response for students and the campus community
  • Keep current trends and developments in the field through appropriate literature, conferences, and other information resources
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the college


Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling.

AND

Possession of a current valid California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Professional Clinical Counselor, or Psychologist

OR

Bachelor's degree in any of the above and a license as a marriage and family therapist (MFT);

OR

The equivalent. Certain combination of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the state minimum qualifications for these positions. AND

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in providing psychological services (individual and group) in college counseling center setting
  • The ability to deal with serious and sensitive issues in a highly confidential manner
  • A strong commitment to advancing diversity
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development; innovation and improvement of counseling and teaching; and to assuming faculty responsibilities beyond the counseling department in a shared governance environment.
  • The ability to work independently, and cooperatively, as a member of a college team
  • May be required to work evening and/or weekend hours for crisis response, appointments or special events
  • Knowledge of the State of California Rules and Statutes
  • Demonstrated proficiency in various technologies and web resources related to Mental Health
  • Demonstrated experience assisting students in developing a plan to achieve an educational and/or career goals

  • Ability to develop and maintain student personal counseling notes in a timely and effective manner
  • Ability to develop outreach, such as workshops and in-services trainings, and prevention services that promote psychological wellness

  • Ability to demonstrate planning and organization skills
  • Knowledge and ability to consult effectively with faculty and staff regarding students with personal, family, or psychological issues as well as incidents of disruption behavior on campus
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other student services professionals to develop innovative programs or service delivery models
  • Ability to demonstrate strength in interpersonal communication
  • Experience developing innovative programs that strengthen the quality of personal counseling services provided to students
  • An equity-minded counseling approach focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive space that support student engagement and success
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively and professionally with the campus
  • Maintains appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics
  • The ability and desire to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance student success
