About the Opportunity

Responsibilities

The Financial Analyst - Grants, a key position within the Dean's Office of the College of Science (COS), provides timely, accurate, and compliant pre- and post-award support to COS principal investigators (PIs) by researching, interpreting, and applying the policies and procedures that govern grant, contract, and internal awards. Responsibilities include providing monthly account reports and balances; reviewing expenditures for compliance, resolving accounting issues, meeting with PIs regularly to monitor and review portfolios, facilitating annual effort certifications; preparing projections for awards, working to resolve errors, request extensions, and properly close project accounts within policy guidelines and time requirements.

Individual provides support in the areas of proposal development, data collection, compilation, and proofing for submission of proposals for new research opportunities. This position manages the full life cycle of proposals and active awards. The incumbent will coordinate budget preparation and the submission of proposals to the Northeastern University Research Enterprise Services office (NU-RES) or other university offices within tight timeframes. The position serves as liaison between PIs, department staff, NU-RES, other University offices and external research institutions. Ensures adherence to COS, NU-RES, University, and external agency formatting & content guidelines and requirements. Develops the administrative budget portion of all outgoing proposals, coordinating approval on all cost share commitments by the Associate Deans of COS. Works with Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research to provide reporting on research activity and effectiveness throughout COS. Assists PIs by creating and maintaining financial reports on active grants; monitoring of expenditures; identifies expiring grants and works with appropriate parties to determine eligibility for no cost extension and processes associated modifications or closeout actions.

The Financial Analyst's responsibilities also include the analysis of processes in order to improve workflow and work efficiencies; determine changes needed in order to avoid repetition of errors; plan for better faculty satisfaction for the management of their funded portfolio; and provide formal and informal training opportunities. Perform related duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree required, with a Business or Finance major preferred. Candidate should have up to 3 years of professional work experience in higher education and/or business setting. A strong customer service focus is required. Familiarity with overall federal grant administration is desired.

Candidate must have accounting and finance knowledge and be able to work with budgets; have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational, prioritization and time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and complete tasks for a number of principal investigators and administrators. A strong attention to detail, customer service oriented, initiative, flexibility and the ability to work independently and as a member of a team are required. Successful candidate must stay current with all new and existing regulatory requirements and institutional policies/procedures and keep faculty PIs and department leadership informed of changes. Due to the amount of personal and financial information involved, the Financial Analyst must have the aptitude for treating sensitive information related to salaries, department finances and science in a confidential and professional manner. Advanced experience with MS Office and Adobe Professional and the ability to learn new software and techniques quickly is essential.
