Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Career Center Director, the Senior Career Counselor/Coordinator provides support to the academic departments and Colleges of the University to help them develop experiential learning opportunities for their students, and connect their academic programs to the needs to today's job market. The Senior Career Counselor/Coordinator prepares students for employability and career readiness through workshops and individual sessions focusing on resumes and cover letters, job search strategies, interview techniques, professional development. In addition to career development, the Senior Career Counselor/Coordinator also helps students explore and prepare for application to professional schools for graduate study.

The incumbent leads the campus-wide responsibility for implementing and coordinating the career counseling program, with the goal to help students and alumni learn how to make informed decisions in their educational and career choices. In addition, the incumbent provides lead work direction campus-wide on the Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions (DHSI) Degree with a Purpose and serves as Project Activity Director for DHSI Career Counseling Activities and the new professional development certification for the Train the Trainer - Career Everywhere certification. The incumbent leads our Integrated Academic Advising and other satellite wraparound support services as part of our services under Strategic Student Support Programs. Lead responsibility includes oversight for career counselors, graduate interns, and career ambassadors, in conjunction with the Director. In addition, the position coordinates the Career Tracks and other career readiness programs and leads strategic planning and assessment initiatives with the Career Center team to develop and measure student learning outcomes, as well as other requested data. This position is characterized by highly complex student services work requiring independent advisement in individual and groups and independent analysis in reviewing the most difficult individual, group and organizational problems pertaining to career services and programs. This position includes assignments requiring the application of a high degree of judgment, persuasiveness, imagination and professional skills and knowledge regarding Career Center services and programs. This position requires considerable administrative planning to develop creative solutions that integrate approaches across organizational lines. The Senior Career Counselor/Coordinator is also responsible for recognizing specific program needs and for developing approaches for implementation for student engagement and success.

FLSA: Exempt

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,351 - $7,633 per month

Hiring Range: Anticipated hiring range is typically near the minimum of the classification range, although commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment to this classification.

Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge. General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management; general knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.

Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions; advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature; reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas; plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations; analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served; and establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.

Experience:

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job‑related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Required Qualifications

Experience
  1. Experience working with students dealing with highly sensitive issues.
  2. Workforce development, career counseling, or related experience.
  3. Experience planning, developing, coordinating, and implementing programs in an academic setting.
  4. Experience using Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  5. Experience developing relationships with and persuading key constituents including deans, department chairs, faculty, staff, and employers.
  6. Experience conducting research, collecting data and developing statistical reports.
  7. Experience counseling and advising students facing complex and highly sensitive issues individually and in a group setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
