Job Summary

The Partnership Outreach Programs department in the Office of Precollege Outreach and Engagement seeks to hire an enthusiastic, motivated, and culturally competent writing instructor who will deliver writing instruction to our community based precollege programs. We seek instructors who can support first-generation and students from marginalized communities in our two-week summer program. The instructor must be able to provide culturally responsive instruction and strengthen students’ persuasive writing skills.

The instructor is expected to teach writing based on college level work, while providing a safe and supportive space for learning. This is a valuable opportunity for program participants to experience the demand of college level work in an environment which will grow their academic curiosity.

This position will take place on the CU Boulder campus over the summer from June 13-24th. The instructor will be required to provide/develop curriculum which helps students develop and complete two essays which will be used to submit for the Common Application for university admission applications. The curriculum should be grounded in techniques in persuasive writing, while also incorporating culturally responsive and relevant pedagogies that empower program participants to elevate their lived experiences and transform them into powerful narratives to be woven into their college admission essays.

There is opportunity for the selected instructor(s) to teach multiple sections of the course. The instructor can expect to have between 12-16 students per section. The writing course will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The first section will be from 9-10 AM and the second from 10:30-11:30 AM, and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-3:00 PM.

Finally, the instructor will be required to attend two training dates: May 25th, from 8:30 AM-2:00 Pm at the CU Denver Campus and Thursday, June 9th, at CU Boulder.

The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

The Partnership Outreach Programs Department provides precollege services and support to multiple communities across the State of Colorado. Our mission is to create opportunities of access for first-generation students, supporting their future goals for post-secondary enrollment.

Specifically, our department directs summer programming for students coming to our campus from the western slope in the Roaring Fork Valley and Summit County, the eastern plains in Morgan County, southern Colorado in the San Luis Valley, locally from Boulder County.

Over the summer the department directs and coordinates seven programs, which serves over 200 first-generation students through our outreach efforts. During their time with us, students will explore living away from their families and learn to navigate a collegiate experience for the first time. Students will gain skills to support their future application and transition into their chosen post-secondary studies. During this time, the program participant will be able to examine critical experiences in a safe and supported program, which will further facilitate their understanding and expectations for their undergraduate studies.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Create and provide a course syllabus for student reference and use in summer program.
  • Create curriculum which supports the development and production of two college admission essays based on the national Common Application prompts given.
  • Provide supportive and directive feedback, which enhances the students’ essays without altering the personal narratives.
  • Enhance and build student’s persuasive writing knowledge base through course lectures. When using outside literature and other mediums for instruction, we strongly encourage the use of written works from Scholars of Color and other marginalized identities.

  • Provide final grade to program director.
What You Should Know

  • This position does require you to teach in-person.
  • This is a temporary appointment with the university as a lecturer and does not qualify for university benefits.
  • Payment will be distributed at the end of the month during university pay cycle and not at the end of the program.
  • We strongly encourage the instructor to use a web based platform for course deliverables and materials.
