Job Summary:

The Post Award Accountant will work with principal investigators and research staff to budget, monitor expenditures, prepare, and reconcile financial data for sponsored programs within the Department of Bacteriology. The person in this position will process and/or approve transactions such as cost transfers, monitor procurement, provide sub award management and will prepare monthly financial and projection reports.

Responsibilities:

Works directly with principal investigator and research staff to budget, monitor expenditures, and reconcile financial data for sponsored programs. May directly process and/or approve accounting transactions such as cost transfers, procurement, sub award management, and financial processing related to sponsored project management. May review and approve transactions on behalf of an intermediate unit or center.
  • 50% Assists principal investigators with financial management of sponsored program budgets and directs day-to-day fiscal transactions
  • 15% Prepares and processes financial reporting and/or invoicing information
  • 10% Provides expertise and advice related to procurement and allowable charges
  • 10% Reviews financial expenditures for accuracy on sponsored grants and contracts
  • 15% Serve as site manager for departmental procurement cards

Tasks:
  • Serve as Bacteriology's Purchasing and Travel Card Site Manager. Supervise procurement and travel card activities, ensuring that purchasing rules and regulations are understood and followed.
  • Review critical data and analyze grant budgets for salaries, fringe benefits, supplies and services. Ensure funding availability and identify and transfer funds as necessary to cover any overdrafts.
  • Independently develop budgets vs. expenditures variance reports for all departmental accounts for review by principal investigators, Departmental Chair and Academic Department Manager each month.
  • In collaboration with department payroll staff and pre-award staff, ensure appointments are funded appropriately according to project budgets and Principal Investigator instructions.
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor and Chair.

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree

Qualifications:

- Minimum of six months of experience in research or sponsored programs administration required.
- Experience with grants, contracts, and sponsored research; federal and non-federal sponsors/agencies; program, budgetary, regulatory, and compliance requirements desired.
- Experience with UW-Madison Purchasing policies and procedures is preferred.
- Skills required: effective oral and written communication; ability to meet deadlines and prioritize workload; independent problem solving and analytical abilities; comprehensive working knowledge of computing environments/software; and strengths in organization, multi-tasking, reasoning/logic, mathematics, and training.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
