Position Summary:

The Academic Coaches (one position per discipline- English, Math, Science and Foreign Language) are responsible for planning and implementing dynamic, engaging, empowering project-based courses as part of our 6-week summer program for area high school students.

The Upward Bound Academic Coach will be responsible for developing curriculum, designing lesson objectives and daily plans, manage classroom environments, conduct parent/guardian outreach, track attendance, and complete student evaluations. The Science and language course will culminate in a presentation of the students’ projects and the coach will evaluate their project based on a rubric. The English and Math will be evaluated on their pre/post diagnostic assessment, writing assignments and math assessments.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related field with two (2) or more years of experience working with middle or high school students in an educational setting.

Successful Candidate must have or must possess:
  • Experience with assessment techniques in the subject area(s).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Connecticut Secondary Teaching Certification.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish, Albanian).
  • Experience utilizing online platforms for communication, assessment, and data collection.
Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and Upward Bound Site Coordinator, the Academic Coach will be responsible for the direct instruction of enrichment courses for the Upward Bound Academic Academy students in the content areas of English, Math, Science, and Foreign Language through these essential functions:
  • Design a curriculum that matches and supports Upward Bound's teaching and learning goals and yearly theme.
  • Implement an assessment/evaluation system for determining student success on assignments, culminating projects, class participation and the course.
  • Identify educational reference materials (books, articles, supplies, etc.) to be utilized during the course. Incorporate culturally responsive pedagogy, student-centered learning, and multicultural perspectives.
  • Focus on one overarching project that guides the content and skills you want students to learn and apply to be presented on the last day of the summer program.
  • Collaborate with Associate Dean and Program Coordinator to maximize academic benefits for each individual student.
  • Direct the work of a teaching assistant (Mentor/Tutor) for the content area.
  • Coaches also engage in non-instructional virtual activities including weekly meetings, facilitated study sessions, and co-curricular activities.
These enrichment courses will be offered to area high school students at Naugatuck Valley Community College
