Job Description Summary

The Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler School of Engineering ( FSE ) is growing rapidly and seeking highly motivated colleagues who would like to help build Chapman University’s newest school and fill the new Swenson Family Hall of Engineering . Opened in the Fall of 2019, FSE offers undergraduate degree programs in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Software Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.

FSE invites applications for a Makerspace Technician position and is looking for an individual who is passionate about technology and its implications for making, as well as improving, accessibility to this technology. The position is expected to begin in early Summer 2022.

Under the direction of the Makerspace Manager, the Makerspace Technician will ensure the smooth operation of the Design / Create / Innovate ( DCI ) Lab. This includes assisting with training, ensuring safety and operating protocols, and supporting development where needed. Provide support and mentorship for students, staff, and faculty in course-related projects, engineering-specific extracurricular activities, academic research related to fabrication, and projects that require assistance with manual or CNC metalworking. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment in both the DCI Lab and Tool Crib. Perform maintenance on equipment to ensure minimal disruption to daily use.

Responsibilities

Maintenance of Facilities and Inventory
  • In collaboration with the Makerspace Manager, support the day-to-day operations and activities in the Fowler School of Engineering ( FSE ) Design / Create / Innovate Lab makerspace and facilities.
  • Troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance of equipment. Coordinate maintenance needs, submit/track work orders to ensure completion, and conduct routine/preventive maintenance to ensure uninterrupted services of equipment and facilities.
  • Assist in coordinating facility use and activities for non-Chapman users (industry partners, training, external academic partnerships, collaborative research, outreach, etc.)
  • Work in partnership with the makerspace manager to manage the budget and planned expenditures for the space.
  • Support basic administrative functions including creating and following up on purchase requisitions, preparing sole source forms and routing for approvals, ensuring receipt of items, and working closely with vendors to ensure information accuracy on invoices.
  • Organize and manage records and documentation on equipment, instruments, and supplies necessary for labs, makerspace, and facilities.
  • Attend meetings, including facilities coordination and risk management meetings, as required and report back to the Makerspace Manager and FSE Leadership.
  • Coordinate with leadership, staff, and various university departments on space use and allocation, special events, storage, and facilities access.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment in both the makerspace and tool crib. This includes receiving packages and notifying recipients as well as logging the checkout and returns of assets and supplies.
  • Track and update database of members’ training and access to the DCI Lab and Tech Shop.
Project Support and Safety
  • Ensure the safe and efficient daily operation of the facilities. Follow all safety policies, procedures, and programs; act as a responsible party for individual safety and the safety of others.
  • Support students and faculty in course-related projects, engineering-specific extracurricular activities, and academic research related to manufacturing/making facilities and programs.
  • Assist in training and scheduling student employees as well as supervising them in the absence of the makerspace manager.
  • In conjunction with the makerspace manager, faculty, staff, and students, participate in the development and implementation of training materials, safety standards, policies, and procedures for the makerspace and FSE facilities.
  • Schedule, coordinate and facilitate training sessions on equipment, technology, and safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of (2) years of college in a related field plus one (1) year of related work experience. A combination of formal education and experience is highly preferred. .
  • Experience setting up, programming, and operating CNC machines.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design using digital modeling and fabrication software.
  • Familiarity with prototyping equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and woodworking equipment.
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills with the ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups at all organizational levels, both inside and outside of the University.
  • Technical skills to learn and use enterprise systems and applications needed for the position.
  • Proven competence in problem-solving, work agility, attention to detail, and prioritization.
  • Computer literacy with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn, demonstrate and enforce proper health and safety procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to perform general clerical functions critical to the maintenance and efficiency of the facilities and equipment.
  • Ability to work within a budget effectively and monitor expenditures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience operating prototyping equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and woodworking equipment.
  • Experience with printed circuit board ( PCB ) design and fabrication.
  • Experience supervising and training undergraduate and graduate students on the use and operation of equipment.
  • Demonstrated mechanical/electrical aptitude, corroborated by work history.
