Coordinator for the LGBTQ Center

Office of Equity and Inclusion – LGBTQ Center

Central Connecticut State University invites applications for a Coordinator for the LGBTQ Center. Reporting to the Vice President of Equity and Inclusion, the Coordinator for the LGBTQ Center facilitates the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational, social, support and resource programs and services for the LGBTQIA+ campus community. The Coordinator works collaboratively with other University departments to contribute to the University’s overall goal of ensuring that all students, faculty, and staff feel welcome and part of the CCSU campus community.


Supervision: May supervise professional and/or support staff.

Position Responsibilities:

Designs, develops, implements, coordinates and/or presents a variety of support services and programs for LGBTQIA+ students, faculty and staff to enhance the educational, personal and professional developmental and work experience of LGBTQIA+ individuals in the University’s community.

Provides crisis intervention and referral services in conjunction with the Student Wellness Center - Counseling and other University support services.

Develops, coordinates and/or and presents LGBTQIA+ cultural sensitivity training, educational programs/workshops and other LGBTQIA+ related topics to the University community, parents, caregivers, etc.

Advocates for LGBTQIA+ related concerns and promotes intercultural understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Serves as a resource and liaison to the campus community regarding LGBTQIA+ topics/issues and campus climate. Provides educational resource materials to individuals and groups.

Identifies, develops and assesses specialized support groups and programs that address the needs of the LGBTQIA+ community relating to academics, personal support, professional development and campus climate issues, and includes reaching out to and working with other on-campus student organizations, University departments and community partners.

May recruit LGBTQIA+ sensitive volunteers to become peer mentors, and, work closely to advise LGBTQIA+ student organizations to ensure proper leadership training and development.

In conjunction with the Vice President of Equity and Inclusion, accounts for the expenditure of LGBTQ funds.

Leads, encourages and works cooperatively with University departments, faculty, staff and students to promote the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ issues in the curriculum and improve recruitment and retention of LGBTQIA+ students.

Represents the University/LGBTQ Center at open houses, resource fairs, relevant community events and collaborative committees, etc., and works to increase awareness of LGBTQ concerns; oversees various annual events.

Assists in the development of and/or makes recommendations regarding policies and procedures, newsletters, brochures, web pages, etc., that can be used to promote inclusion.

Documents, tracks and monitors participant utilization for program reports.

Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education, human services, social work or related area and four years of professional experience working with LGBTQIA+-identified individuals.
  • Considerable knowledge regarding the concerns and issues of LGBTQ individuals.
  • Experience in community-based activism and/or advocacy.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, coordinating, and presenting programs and events.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability in the use of personal computer equipment and standard office software, such as Microsoft office Suite.

 Credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an educational environment with students and/or student groups.
  • Experience with search engines and video conferencing software.

The Community: Located nine miles southwest of Hartford, New Britain is a city of approximately 72,000. Part of the Greater Hartford area of 1.2 million residents, New Britain is centrally located in the state and is within easy reach of much of Connecticut and several metropolitan areas. Nicknamed “the Hardware City” for its rich industrial heritage, it is home to Stanley Black & Decker. Important cultural institutions include the New Britain Museum of American Art and Walnut Hill Park, designed by Fredrick Law Olmstead. New Britain’s population is characterized by a high degree of racial and ethnic diversity. Currently, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates 70% of the population as White, 13% as Black or African American, 3% as Asian, and 0.2% as American Indian or Alaska Native. Currently 4.6% of New Britain’s population identify themselves in more than one racial category and 43% of New Britain’s population identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino. Fifty percent (50%) speak a language other than English in the home and 19% were born internationally. Significant portions of its population come from Puerto Rico and Poland or consider themselves to be from the African-American, Italian, or Irish ethnic backgrounds. In addition to all that greater Hartford provides, New Britain is 40 minutes from Springfield, Massachusetts two hours from Boston, and two hours from New York City. It is also part of the Hartford-Springfield “Knowledge Corridor” and, therefore, within easy driving distance of a host of private and public institutions of higher education and many cultural opportunities.

The Coordinator for the LGBTQ Center is compensated at the Administrator 4 salary level in accordance with the State University Organization of Administrative Faculty (SUOAF) Collective Bargaining Union Agreement.
