Job Description

This one-year Postdoctoral Scholar appointment will be in conjunction with NAU's Institute for Public and Professional Ethics in Leadership, an Institute that promotes civil discourse about ethics and leadership through academic research, an interdisciplinary curriculum, co-curricular programs, and community engagement. The Postdoctoral Scholar will contribute to the mission and values of the Department of Philosophy and the Institute for Public and Professional Ethics in Leadership by teaching courses in ethics (two in the fall semester and one in the spring semester), conducting research on themes related to ethics, and giving one public presentation on their research.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will be working closely with both the Department of Philosophy and the Institute for Public and Professional Ethics in Leadership, they will be an active member of the NAU scholarly community, and they will serve as an intellectual resource for the broader community.

Essential Functions

Research & Publications - 50%

• Refines and expands on completed PhD thesis or themes related to thesis.
• Prepares primary and/or secondary research for thesis publication as monograph or peer reviewed articles.
• Explores new research in the field of Ethics and/or Applied Ethics.
• Acts as a liaison with faculty affiliates of the Institute for Public and Professional Ethics in Leadership where appropriate and serves a resource for students and faculty.

Teaching & Student- Realted Activites - 30%

• Teaches two 3-credit courses in the fall semester and one 3-credit course in the spring semester.
• Depending on the final candidate's expertise, one course will be on their research in Ethics (PHI 325, Topics in Ethics) and the other two courses will be within Ethics (such as PHI 105, Introduction to Ethics) and/or Applied Ethics (such as PHI 331, Environmental Ethics, PHI 335, Ethics and Disability, etc.).

Program Outreach & Collaboration - 15%

• Presents at least one public presentation at NAU that will be advertised to the general public in addition to the NAU community.
• Participates in outreach to local and regional communities, such as moderating a community discussion or presenting at a community Sedona Salon, both of which are organized by Philosophy in the Public Interest, an award-winning, community-centered initiative within the Department of Philosophy.
• Participates in Department of Philosophy and Institute for Public and Professional Ethics in Leadership events, including, when applicable, student research projects or Institute brownbag sessions.
• Participates in the regional High School Ethics Bowl to be organizedby and held at NAU in Spring 2023.

Other - 5%

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• PhD in Philosophy or related field conferred by start date, with and area of specialty in Ethics, broadly construed to include applied ethics and political/social philosophy.

Preferred Qualifications

• An active scholarly agenda, including research that has or will lead to peer-reviewed publications or presentations.
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness, which can include student evaluations, prior supervisor/peer assessments, class visitations reviews, and/or other materials.
• Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in teaching, research, and/or service.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Experience or interest in developing programming that elevates the public profile of Philosophy in general and Ethics in particular.
• Ability to engage across philosophical sub-fields and conduct interdisciplinary research.
• Knowledge of and research in ethics.
• Ability to teach ethics at the undergraduate level.
• Ability to articulate ethical ideas to general audiences effectively.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

This is a 9-month position. The annual salary has been prorated to reflect the anticpated range of $41,084 - $51,363. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

Post-Doctoral Scholars are hired on a contract basis, renewable each fiscal year for a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years) according to terms of the Arizona Board of Regents' Conditions of Post-Doctoral Service. NAU offers an excellent benefit package to Post-Doctoral Scholars including generous health, dental and vision insurance; 10 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Participation in NAU retirement plans is not available to Post-Doctoral Scholars.
