POSITION DETAILS

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students, the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs (AVP) is responsible for multiple offices within the Division of Student Affairs. Specifically, the AVP is responsible for leadership in the areas of Enrollment Management, Advising, and Academic Achievement and progress as well as other offices within the Division. The candidate serves as a key leader in fostering the academic excellence and overall success of all Hunter College students, providing leadership, inspiration, management, and guidance for the College's enrollment and retention strategies. In addition, the successful candidate will provide vision for the programs that enhance the student experience at the College, building partnerships, setting benchmarks, developing best practices and leading collaborative efforts.

 

The AVP directly supervises three divisional Assistant Deans and while working in concert with Assistant Deans, this position is chiefly responsible for the following departments/programs:

 

    Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment

    Student Financial Aid

    Advising Services

    Student Communications

    Intercollegiate Athletics

    Student Life

 

The AVP is responsible for all duties related to the tracking and record maintenance on behalf of undergraduate students who are placed on probation, are dismissed for academic reasons or are placed on the Dean’s List. In addition, she will ensure that all notice requirements are met and manage all appeals.

 

The AVP will lead efforts to ensure continuous improvement in the delivery of student services and success programs as well as the following:

Oversee coordination and collaborative efforts among the various offices that make up in the Division of Student Affairs.

Develop both short-term and long-term plans for the areas under their direct supervision to successfully achieve Divisional goals and objectives.

Develop expected outcomes for each office or unit and its programs and services, evaluate the outcomes, and prepare feedback and reports as appropriate.

Evaluate and measure the success of all services. Engage in ongoing benchmarking of best practices to ensure strong evidence-based services and programs.

Ensure compliance with local, state or federal agencies as related to the programs and services within the offices.

Build a strong collaborative working environment with other constituents including academic departments and faculty. Establish relationships with other departments within Student Affairs, relevant university and external constituents.

Assist the Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students by chairing, convening, and/or serving on committees, task forces, councils, etc., related to undergraduate programs and/or student affairs.

 Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 Earned doctorate or terminal degree strongly preferred; ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in higher education and student affairs administration preferred. Proven success with enrollment management, student retention strategies and initiatives desired. Demonstrated experience with collaborative projects between student affairs and academic programs. Demonstrated experience with strategic planning and assessment of learning outcomes. Candidates should also have experience working in an urban academic institution with students from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds. Strong organizational, interpersonal, problem solving, and communication skills required; ability to develop and maintain collaborations involving students, parents, staff, faculty, administration and the community are essential. Demonstrate excellent listening and problem-solving skills. Exhibit the flexibility to manage multiple complex roles which require a broad base of knowledge. Possess the ability to articulate the philosophy of Student Affairs and its contribution to student development.
