The Department of Health Sciences in the College of Health Professions and Sciences at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-earning assistant professor or tenured associate professor. The expected start date is Spring 2023.

Candidates with expertise in one or more of the following disciplines are encouraged to apply: pathophysiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, human nutrition, health behavior or clinical applications of preventive health. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a productive line of research; publish in highly-ranked, peer-reviewed journals in their discipline; pursue and secure external funding to support their research program; teach undergraduate and future graduate courses; mentor students in research; participate in internal and external professional service activities; and demonstrate collegiality in all aspects of faculty engagement. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

The Department of Health Sciences is the second largest department at UCF with ~3900 undergraduate students in the major and about 500 students in the minor. Strategic emphasis within the Department of Health Sciences focuses on clinical, pathophysiological, and behavioral understanding of human health. The Department of Health Sciences is recognized for its high quality of educational offerings and growing research impact. For more information about the Department of Health Sciences, visit our website at: https://healthprofessions.ucf.edu/healthsciences/.

The Department of Health Sciences is housed within the College of Health Professions and Sciences at UCF. The college is a core member of the relatively new UCF Academic Health Sciences Center (AHSC) along with the existing Colleges of Nursing and Medicine. CHPS hosts four academic units, the Department of Health Sciences, the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the School of Kinesiology & Physical Therapy, and the School of Social Work.

The University of Central Florida is an emerging preeminent research university in Florida and one of the largest universities in the U.S. with a diverse student body of approximately 72,000 students and has grown substantially in size, quality, diversity, and reputation in its first 50 years. UCF and its 13 colleges offer 230 degree programs from UCF’s main campus, hospitality campus, health sciences campus, online, and through our 10 regional locations. UCF has been identified as one of the top five “Schools to Watch” by U.S. News & World Report. The university and college stress the importance of community engagement and partnerships and offer the unique opportunity for collaborative research and service.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned doctorate, Ph.D. or equivalent, in a health sciences-related discipline from an accredited academic institution of higher education is required by the start of the appointment. Evidence of teaching experience in subjects within the core health sciences curriculum at UCF (i.e., pathophysiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, nutrition, research methods, health behavior, clinical applications of preventive health or other courses related to the department’s core curriculum), a record of scholarly research, peer-reviewed publications, and other scholarly activities are also required.

Applicants at the associate professor level will need to demonstrate success as an independent researcher with extramural funding, a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications, and recognizable impact of their research including citations and other relevant indicators of success. To be eligible for appointment as a tenured associate professor upon hire, the successful candidate must have a distinguished record of scholarly achievement and teaching experience commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor.

Preferences

Candidates who demonstrate or show clear potential for developing a viable, focused research program with a high probability of securing extramural funding and forming strong collaborations within and/or external to the department will be given preference. Other preferences include experience teaching academic courses to undergraduate/graduate students as the instructor of record in an academic program at an institution of higher education; evidence of effectiveness of teaching and instructional innovation in a large and diverse academic program within a university setting; and evidence of effective student mentoring, including mentoring teaching assistants and undergraduate/graduate student theses.
