Coordinator of Fraternity & Sorority Life - Interfraternity Council

 

The Fraternity & Sorority Life Office at JMU is home to a vibrant and dynamic community, with over 4,400 students, 10 IFC Panhellenic Sororities, and 13 ICGC. Chapters totaling approximately 23% of the student population. Our office is housed in the Division of Student Affairs under the Student Life department working closely with colleagues in Student Activities & Involvement, Off-Campus Life, Student Leadership Center, Office of Residence Life, and the Center for Multicultural Student Services. Fraternity & Sorority Life is looking for people who are passionate about the Fraternal experience and enjoy challenging students to live their values each and every day.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Supervision
    Supervise personnel including one Graduate Assistant and student employees. Hire, train, schedule, and support staff in meeting programmatic goals. Provide clear expectations, meaningful learning opportunities, timely and constructive feedback, and effective management of performance issues if and when they occur. Foster a comfortable work environment, a culture of personal and professional excellence, and working relationships based on inclusiveness and mutual respect.

    2. Advising
    Serve as the principal Advisor to the Interfraternity Council. Attend weekly IFC meetings; guiding and mentoring the President and Executive Officers in advancing the goals and ideals of JMU’s fraternal community and ensuring all meetings and business is conducted in accordance with Interfraternity Constitution and FSL policies. Advise all IFC Chapters by meeting with the Chapter Presidents on a regular basis, providing guidance and support in meeting chapter goals, achieving continuous improvement, upholding organizational values, and attending Chapter meetings as requested or needed. Assist and support IFC Chapters with their events and assisting with and supporting Chapter events.

    3. Recruitment
    Manage the IFC recruitment and new member period processes. Ensure recruitment and new member period processes follow IFC and university policies, maintain recruitment documentation via the appropriate recruitment software platform, track recruitment statistics, and investigate reasons, trends, and concerns associated with new members not becoming initiated members.

    4. Program Areas
    Assist and/or lead FSL efforts in designing, implementing, and assessing core areas of responsibility including risk management, diversity and inclusion, philanthropy/service, and academic achievement programs and initiatives.

    5. Extension
    Lead the expansion and chartering processes related to Interfraternity chapters. Effectively coordinate with and support IHQ representatives and emerging leaders in recruiting and establishing viable and healthy colonies on campus. Ensure expansion efforts are in accordance with university policies.

    6. Assessment
    Work with the Associate Director to develop and implement ongoing assessment efforts with the e3xpressed purpose of measuring attainment of objective and program improvement. Assessment should ascertain needs, participation and non-participation demographics, participants’ satisfaction, and accomplishment of stated goals and learning objectives. Assessment results should inform resource allocation, program improvement, and marketing processes.

    7. Health & Safety
    Serve on a rotating schedule as a staff member on call for Fraternity & Sorority Life students. As part of this rotation weekend and night work will be required; occasionally the on-call rotation will require in-person proactive activities, in addition to being available by phone.

    8. Marketing
    Use various marketing mediums and strategies to disseminate information related to Fraternity and Sorority Life and associated programs and resources. Assist in maintaining the FSL website. Utilize website usage analytics and other inputs in adapting website design, marketing efforts, and information dissemination.

    9. Budget Management
    Coordinate with FSL staff to maintain all office budgets, ensure appropriate and effective use of available resources, and assist in the annual budget development process.

    10. Collaboration
    Proactively develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Student Activities & Involvement, Off-Campus Life, Student Leadership. Center, Center for Multicultural Student Services, Residence Life, Public Safety, and other stakeholders where such relationships would promote efficiency/effectiveness in fulfilling the Fraternity & Sorority Life. mission.

    11. Committee Work
    Serve on department and university committees as assigned. Actively participate in accomplishing established goals and objectives.

    12. Professional Development
    Accomplish a minimum of 20 hours of professional development, attend Student Life professional development training, participate in staff retreats and other job-related training specific to the fraternity and sorority community. Effectively utilize conferences and other professional development opportunities as tools for staying current in the field of fraternity and sorority life.

Qualifications:

 

Required:

  • Demonstrate experience relevant to the duties and responsibilities (graduate school and assistantship work accepted).
  • Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years relevant experience
  • A record of commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Be highly skilled in both the development of materials for, and the delivery of impactful and engaging presentations, training sessions, and workshops.
  • Be knowledgeable in basic marketing skills, social media platforms, recruitment techniques, and supervisory skills.
  • Be current on research and trends in the field of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
  • Possess the ability to lift light objects of 25 pounds. or less. Limited use of highly specialized equipment and/or machinery.
  • This role requires flexible hours, such as late weeknights and weekend work.

 

Preferred:

  • Membership in a Greek Letter Social Organization
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
