JOB SUMMARY:

Works in conjunction with the Director for Environmental Health and Safety as well as the Chemistry Laboratory Safety and Waste Management Officer, this position manages the upkeep of the chemical stockroom that serves the introductory laboratories including Physiological Chemistry, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.

REPORTS TO: Department Chair

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
  1. Placing chemicals and hardware into storage when deliveries are made.
  2. Keeping laboratories and stockrooms clean.
  3. Staffing stockroom windows when laboratories are in session.
  4. Maintaining individual student drawers.
  5. Preparing and overseeing preparation of chemical solutions for laboratory courses.
  6. Overseeing, coordinating and training student workers in stockroom functions.
  7. Managing the budge for introductory laboratories and general supplies.
  8. Assisting in routine disposal of chemical waste.
  9. Retrieving and maintaining supplies in storage on the fourth-floor stockroom.
  10. Dividing chemicals from gallon or liter containers into dropper bottle assemblies.
  11. Setting up and testing electronic equipment and making sure general supplies such as gloves are adequate for the whole department.
  12. If needed, the Laboratory Supervisor should also be willing to troubleshoot basic equipment malfunctions.

REQUIREMENTS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
  1. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  2. Ability to interact with a diverse student body.
  3. Strong student service skills and administration skills.
  4. Knowledge of OSHA/EPA regulations in regard to safe handling procedures relating to chemicals and laboratories.
  5. Knowledge of chemical mixtures and safe handling procedures.
  6. Ability to mix, work and set up chemicals safely in a laboratory environment on a regular basis.
  7. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and e-mails are required.
  8. Ability to learn how to print proper chemical labels.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Ability to mix and work with chemicals in a laboratory environment on a regular basis.
  2. Ability to set up chemical experiments in a laboratory environment.
  3. Ability to lift 20-lb boxes using carts, dollies and/or by hand.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry.
