Purpose of Position
The Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications reports to the Director of Athletics and is responsible for all strategic communications within and for the Department of Athletics including media relations, public relations, and digital media. The Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications will serve as a member of the department’s senior staff, advise the leadership group on all strategic communications related items/initiatives and fulfill the role of chief spokesperson for the Department of Athletics.

Compliance with NCAA rules is of the utmost importance at Northern Kentucky University. As a member of the athletics department staff, it is expected that the Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications will have a full understanding of the NCAA rules that pertain to the position. It is also expected that the Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications will comply with all NCAA rules and if he/she becomes aware, or have reasonable cause to believe, that a violation of a rule has occurred he/she will immediately report it to the Director of Athletics or his/her designee. Primary Responsibilities
Regular Duties Performed Daily or Almost Daily:


1. Supervise Assistant Director of Athletics Communication.
2. Anticipating, advising, developing, and implementing strategic communication and messaging strategies. Developing and implementing policies and procedures for the Communications area.
3. Proactively adapt to an ever-changing strategic communications landscape that will allow for operational efficiencies and maximum productivity.
4. Coordinate a comprehensive daily media relations effort designed to generate and maintain interest in Norse Athletics, as well as Northern Kentucky University. Design and implement a communication plan that is creative and is able to tell the story of Norse Athletics in a way that sets NKU apart from other athletic departments.
5. Responsible for Media Relations for men’s basketball and a minimum of two other sport programs.
6. Generate content for social media and website, with specific attention to generation of video content that is designed to provide fans and supporters of the program with up-to-date information on sport programs, special features of sport programs and/or athletes, student-athlete bios, etc.
7. Coordinate webcasting of live events, including determining which events to webcast, hiring of play-by-play and color commentator talent.
8. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, statistics and results of players, teams and coaches. Make public release of records, statistics and player background information to the media and other community outlets on a daily basis.
9. Recruit, supervise and instruct student assistants.
10. Design, write and edit high quality informational and promotional materials and publications, including graphic design pieces.
11. Initiate, coordinate and conduct campaigns to achieve conference, regional and national honors for student-athletes, coaches, and staff members.
12. Provide timely, accurate responses to media and public informational requests. Generate interest in the program through information dissemination to the media, including radio, newspaper, television, and other community outlets.
13. Coordinate such events as media days, press conferences, conference championships hosting media relations efforts and other media relations events.
14. Coordinate all media operations during games, including assignment of seating for writers, statisticians, radio, television, photographers, and scouts; and enforce post-game interview policies.
15. Travel with sports programs to away contests as determined by Director of Athletics.
16. Establish effective interpersonal relationships with coaches, players, administrators, students, and the public.
17. Serve as a member of the senior staff with advisory duties to the Director of Athletics.
18. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Periodic Duties Recurring at Fixed Intervals:


1. Comply with all NCAA and Horizon League rules and regulations. Display professional sportsmanlike conduct during athletic events.
2. This position requires a varying schedule. Nights and weekends will be required in order to meet the needs of the department. Qualifications
Minimum qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
Two or more years of related experience
Proficient in social media

Preferred qualifications
Experience working with StatCrew
Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite
