Purpose of Position
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics, housed in the College of Arts & Sciences at Northern Kentucky University, invites applications from excellent individuals for a full-time renewable lecturer position (non-tenure track) beginning in August 2022. The selected candidate will join department faculty committed to high-quality teaching and support of student success. The newly hired faculty member will support departmental and university efforts to improve student success at the introductory level, including initiatives to ensure accurate math placement. The position is one that requires a presence on campus; fully remote work cannot be supported.

The department is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. The NSF -funded STEM Ready grant (https://www.nku.edu/stemready.html) includes a goal of diversifying the STEM majors at NKU through targeted support to improve mathematics placement. Faculty in the department are critical in the development and implementation of this grant initiative. Last year, a subset of department faculty participated in a professional learning community discussing equitable approaches to grading. These conversations have led to numerous changes in grading practices in hopes of addressing inequities in the classroom. Faculty have also successfully authored Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Fellowship proposals, funded by the College of Arts & Sciences. The most recent proposal incorporated a free, online homework platform (WeBWorK) into introductory mathematics coursework to address issues of access to high-cost publisher platforms. Primary Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities
  • Teach approximately 9 contact hours of introductory level courses per semester, primarily with the MAT designator.
  • Serve as course coordinator for introductory-level algebra-based courses ( MAT 101, MAT 102, MAT 103, MAT 114, MAT 119).
  • Assess and revise (as needed) introductory-level algebra-based courses.
  • Coordinate math placement for incoming students.
  • Explore and participate in relevant professional development opportunities through the Center for Innovation and Technology in Education ( CITE ) and the Center for Teaching and Learning ( CTL ).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, or a related field with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in mathematics/statistics
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Fluency with a variety of technology platforms (e.g. Microsoft Office, Canvas, SAP, etc.)
  • Demonstrated commitment and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience teaching algebra-based courses
  • Experience leading or coordinating groups
  • Experience managing complex projects with various stakeholders
