Job Summary

Auburn University Facilities Management seeks candidates for an Automotive Mechanic position. Determined by experience and education, candidates will be selected for Level I, II, or III .

The Level I Automotive Mechanic assists in performing mechanical services and repairs on university vehicles, under direct supervision. The Level II Automotive Mechanic performs a variety of intermediate mechanical services and repairs on university vehicles under general supervision. The Level III Automotive Mechanic provides advanced skills and expertise regarding a wide array mechanical services and repair techniques of automotive vehicles and their associated components. Serves the highest level field technician regarding automotive mechanisms and provides technical expertise for electronic diagnostics and repair.

Essential Functions

Level I:
- Checks vehicle engine fluids and changes and/or services them as needed.
- Serves as delivery driver including the pick-up and drop-off of vehicles and parts.
- Inspects vehicle tires and changes and/or repairs them as needed.
- Details university vehicles to include washing, waxing, vacuuming, and glass cleaning.
- Conducts road tests for all repaired vehicles, ensuring fleet serviceability.
- Performs routine maintenance on lawn care equipment, heavy equipment, and farm tractors and implements.
- May perform maintenance and repairs on small engines, including, but not limited to, weed eaters, lawnmowers, and leaf blowers.
- Responsible for meeting and maintaining all training and certification requirements as outlined by the department’s training and credentialing requirements.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.

Level II:
- Provides maintenance services, diagnostics, and component repairs and replacements on university vehicles including, but not limited to, brakes; suspensions; hoses; alternators; and electrical, ignition, and exhaust systems.
- Performs maintenance and repairs on small engines including, but not limited to, weed eaters, lawnmowers, and leaf blowers.
- Provides maintenance and repairs to slow moving vehicles ( SMV ) such as golf carts, UTV’s, and electric carts.
- Performs repairs on heavy mechanical equipment including, but not limited to, dump trucks and personnel lifts.
- Responsible for responding to campus-wide emergency service calls.
- May weld and fabricate parts including, but not limited to, brackets, braces, and shields to support automotive repair work.
- Responsible for meeting and maintaining all training and certification requirements as outlined by the department’s training and credentialing requirements.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.

Level III :
- Performs complex maintenance and repair activities on university vehicles, such as engine overhauls; transmission repairs; system diagnostics; heating and air conditioning system servicing; and advanced-level drivability issues.
- Expertly provides maintenance services, diagnostics, and component replacements and repairs on all university vehicle components including, but not limited to, brakes; suspensions; hoses; alternators; and electrical, ignition, and exhaust systems.
- Provides guidance to other technicians with these duties.
- Provides advanced-level diagnostics, maintenance, installation, and repair of automotive electrical and computer systems.
- Evaluates engine and transmission replacement needs, as well as determines and performs the appropriate repair method.
- Responsible for meeting and maintaining all training and certification requirements as outlined by the department’s training and credentialing requirements.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.

Level II: High school diploma or equivalent with 3 years of experience in automotive repair techniques including 2 year at the previous level or equivalent.

Level III : Automotive technology or related degree preferred with 5 years of experience in automotive repair techniques including 2 years at the previous level or equivalent.

Minimum Skills and Abilities

Level I:
- Knowledge of basic principles and practices related to automotive repair work.
- Ability to use basic hand tools.
Customer service skills.

Level II:
- Firm knowledge of the concepts, components, and repair techniques related to automotive vehicles including standard road vehicles, slow moving vehicles, and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of Federal Regulations ( ADEM ) for fluid disposal (oil, antifreeze, refrigerant, etc.).
- Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve vehicle issues.
- Intermediate mechanic skills including ability to apply some advanced skills to adapt and meet some complex or non-routine situations.
- Customer service skills.

Level III :
- Advanced knowledge of the concepts, components, and repair techniques related to automotive vehicles including standard road vehicles, slow moving vehicles, and heavy equipment.
- Advanced knowledge of vehicle electronic control units.
- Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve vehicle issues (including issues with computer/electronic components).
- Ability to replace vehicle engines and transmissions.
- Ability to apply highly proficient and specialized skills to varied and complex situations.
- Customer service skills.

Minimum License and Certifications

Level I:
- Valid Driver’s License
- ASE Auto Maintenance and Light Repair Certification Test (G1) is required within first 180 days of employment

Level II:
- Valid Driver’s License
- Two ASE Auto Maintenance and Light Repair Certifications (A1-A8)

Level III :
- Valid Driver’s License
- All ASE Certified Master Automobile Technician (A1-A8 certifications)
