Job Summary:

Centrally located on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, the Chazen Museum of Art is home to the second-largest collection of art in Wisconsin and is the largest collecting museum in the Big 10. Within its 176,000 square feet of museum space is a collection of approximately 23,000 works of art covering diverse historical periods, cultures, and geographic locations. Reporting to the Head of Museum Education, this position is responsible for greeting and guiding visitors to the Chazen Museum, answering questions, and providing information about the building and collection.

Escort groups of visitors through historic or other public buildings, gardens and grounds, or scenic spots; provide information on points of interest; and perform work as required. Duties could include leading a group of visitors through an establishment, usually following a specific route and time schedule; giving prepared information on features of interest; answering inquiries of visitors; collecting fees, registering visitors, or serving as a receptionist; may occasionally do a limited amount of dusting and cleaning.

Responsibilities:

- Work in collaboration with currently enrolled UW-Madison student museum guides to develop and deliver tour content to groups of all ages (40%)
- Conduct light research of the Chazen Museum of Art's collection (10%)
- Speak publicly about art to visitors of all ages and backgrounds (40%)
- Monitor the behavior of tour groups and ensure groups are in compliance with the rules (5%)
- Support the Visitor Services team and monitor the galleries and/or registration desks as needed (5%)

Enthusiasm for engaging with art and art history
Ability to be self-directed
Ability to be reliable and well-planned regarding schedule
Ability to solve problems in flexible, creative ways

Work Schedule:

8-12 hours per week; varies by needs; mandatory weekly training sessions
Schedule: Schedules are based on submitted availability and museum needs. General availability Monday-Friday, 10AM-4PM; occasional weekends and evenings. Occasional summer and academic break availability desired, but not required.

Work Type:

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended based on need and/or funding.


Additional Information:

Multiple positions are available, with a maximum duration of up to two years.
