Position Summary

This position supports the mission of the Building Identity Leading to Diversity ( BUILD ) Scholarships project, the College of Letters, Arts and Science, and the Community College of Denver ( CCD ) Center for Health and Sciences. This position will reside in the Center for Advanced STEM Education ( CASE ) and report to the Principal Investigator for the BUILD Grant.

This person will provide direct service and support to BUILD Scholars prior to and through the admission process, program completion, and STEM careers/graduate programs. Supporting the mission of the grant will include: developing strategies to recruit and retain STEM majors; providing guidance and mentoring for students pursuing STEM degrees; and participating in relevant activities hosted by the Center for Advanced STEM Education ( CASE ).

Duties/Responsibilities

This position will be a mentor and support the student participants in the BUILD Program, recruit STEM majors and prepare them to enter into STEM careers and/or graduate programs. This position must be able to work with diverse populations and non-traditional student populations, with primary responsibilities to provide informed guidance and accurate information in the most efficient, accessible, and comprehensive manner possible. This person will assist the PI, Co-PIs and the leadership team.

Student Recruiting and Retention Support – 55%
  • Assist in the recruitment of participants to all program components.
  • Work in collaboration with the BUILD Team to support student recruitment and retention initiatives.
  • Provide basic institutional information, and function as a resource for students in relation to career planning, financial aid, admissions and other applicable information related to student needs.
  • Refer and/or inform students of University resources.
  • Disseminate policy and procedure information to students,
  • Employ strong interpersonal skills when mentoring students.
  • Recommend strategies and learning skills to enhance academic progress.
  • Monitor participating students’ progress.
  • Coordinate with university, community college, and community partners to facilitate BUILD Scholar workshops, events, and learning activities.
Program Strategy Support – 25%
  • Communicate with internal and external partners as needed.
  • Coordinate and organize special events, meetings, webinars and conferences as requested.
  • Assist in public relations efforts.
  • Represent the BUILD Team in University functions and events relevant to the grant mission and grant-related efforts.
  • Support CASE’s mission.
Record Keeping and Data Management – 20%
  • Facilitate the collection of, update and maintain BUILD Scholar data for program participants and grant reporting efforts.
  • Assist the PI, co-PIs, and the leadership team with regular communications with BUILD Scholars.
  • Maintain tracking systems to ensure appropriate and timely collection and distribution of a variety of documents.
  • Update and maintain the program website and social media with current and relevant information.
  • Track program expenditures and assist budget tracking.
Highly Desirable Competencies:
INTERNAL / EXTERNAL CONTACTS : This position will regularly be in contact with internal and external partners in the scope of completing tasks associated with specified assignments. This position will require a strong ability to manage these types of contacts in a polished and professional manner.

CRITICAL THINKING AND DECISION MAKING : Ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems using logic and reasoning. Presenting ideas to the PI, Co-PIs, and leadership team for consideration as possible solutions.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION : Assist co-workers when working on complex problems or tasks. This list of essential duties, tasks and responsibilities is not all-inclusive; individual will perform other related duties as assigned. Must pass background check.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with students
  • Demonstrated experience and the ability to work with diverse, urban, and non-traditional populations

Work Hours

Three-quarter time benefited position. Regular work hours scheduled within M-F, 8-5. Occasional evening or weekend hours
