The Bipolar Disorder Center at the Mulva Clinic for Neurosciences at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin in conjunction with Integral Care is seeking an exceptional physician to join the Department of Psychiatry and Behavior Sciences focused on bipolar disorder clinical care, education and research.

Background

The future of medical education, care and research is taking shape at the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Made possible by an unprecedented partnership with the people of Austin and Travis County, and the generosity of the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, the Dell Medical School is the first in nearly 50 years to be built from the ground up at a top tier Association of American Universities (AAU) research university.

The Bipolar Disorder Center at the Mulva Clinic for Neurosciences provides specialized, coordinated and competitive out patient-centered team care that is evidence-based and outcome driven to achieve higher healthcare value with the lowest cost. Integral Care, which provides behavioral health services in the community partners with UT Health Austin (UTHA) in the delivery of these services as well. The clinical program at the Bipolar Disorder Center highly intersects with an active bipolar disorder research program in the department of psychiatry.

Job Summary

Bipolar disorder remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the US, and improving bipolar disorder outcomes is an important focus for DMS. The bipolar disorder center psychiatrist position will involve approximately 40 hours/week of outpatient clinical work in the Bipolar Disorder Center and/or affiliated services. Clinical work may be offset depending on education, research and administrative duties. The clinician will work closely with the Bipolar Disorder Center clinical team, and includes consultation, initial evaluation and follow-up treatment of individuals with bipolar disorder and related complex comorbid disorders. Depending on leadership skills, the candidate may progress to a leadership position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality clinical care and clinical teaching.
  • Facilitate bipolar disorder research,
  • Participate in health services research, and dissemination of new learning and innovations.
  • Publish work in high-impact journals. Present work at national and international meetings, work with care providers and health care delivery networks to implement research in practice.
  • Mentor or collaborate with other researchers or researchers in training, including graduate students.
  • The position will include opportunities for teaching medical students, residents, post-doctoral fellows and other trainees.
  • Work collaboratively with Dell Medical School leadership, medical directors, physician providers and other clinical staff to develop excellence in service and clinical care, optimal outcomes, and efficient resource utilization;
  • Serve as a clinical content expert of bipolar disorder at the Mulva Clinic of the Neurosciences evidence-based care delivery and redesign initiatives.
  • Participate in strategic planning and other efforts directly tied to the development and growth of the Bipolar Disorder Center at the Mulva Clinic of the Neurosciences
  • Assist in the creation of infrastructure for bipolar disorder care within the framework of value-based and patient-centered care
  • Develop partnerships with referring physicians, hospitals, and ancillary providers in Austin and Central Texas.
  • Train and mentor students, residents and fellows on new models of care and clinical practice.
  • Develop and foster an atmosphere of scientific and academic inquiry in conjunction with trainees and researchers within the multidisciplinary team
  • Collaborate with other schools at The University of Texas at Austin and across The University of Texas system on multidisciplinary, value-based care models
  • Actively participate in the respective academic department of the candidate and abide by all required Departmental policies.
  • Other clinical responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
  • MD/DO or equivalent Medical Degree from an accredited medical school
  • Board certification in Psychiatry
  • Eligible for faculty appointment with the Dell Medical School as an assistant, associate or full professor
  • Strong record in research, education and clinical service
  • Will possess valid Texas Medical License and state and/or federal license for administration of narcotics

  • Ability to build and lead high-performing teams; must be able to provide clear and accurate direction and guidance.

  • The faculty member will be expected to provide service to the college, the university and the broader professional community.
